Must-have OS legal applications
« on: June 17, 2011, 06:34:03 PM »
Another offshoot of my Amithlon-ish/NG project...

What are the must run applications for this to be useful to you?

This would be system legal apps, not hardware banging things like OCS/AGA games and demos.  Programs that can run with RTG and AHI, but don't require PPC.

I ask because I want to gather them up for testing purposes.

I've already ported UAE for gaming, demos, etc. so this is not a problem.

Thanks

Image Studio
http://aminet.net/package/gfx/conv/ImageStudio_1
http://aminet.net/package/gfx/conv/ImageStudio_2
http://aminet.net/package/gfx/conv/ImageStudioPNG
http://home.exetel.com.au/~amiga/ImageStudio.keyfile

It's a fast, must-have image processing package which loads up quick and lets you resize, crop and modify images very easily. It can load an export just about any format, and it's 100% system friendly. Here's a screenshot of it running on a 16 colour PAL screen, but it will open on a 24bit one in Amithlon:

Nice one.  I'm not sure how I missed ever using that.

@cammy
being an OS-legal application, if written in C or C++ might be ported in other amiga os flavors; did you tried to contact the developers about it? if not will try to send a mail...

Opus Magellen 2.

Sorry, but after using that there is no way I would ever go back to using even a highly modded workbench again.

Wordworth, Final Writer, Photogenics...

I think it would be fantastic if Image Studio (and their later software Draw Studio) was ported to MorphOS, Aros and OS4, but I don't think I'm the right person to try and contact the authors about it to ask for the source, I'm too shy and socially retarded. I think someone like Gulliver might have a better chance since he has more experience and has done a great job so far with other software.

It's also possible that a lot of the image processing routines were written in Assembly and might not be portable.

Sorry, I don't want to seem negative but it's been a pretty sad time lately.

Why be shy, Cammy? What's the worst that can happen? They'll say "no." That don't make you a bad person. Quite the contrary, it makes you a good person for trying. And if they respond with something like "get lost, ya little ^%@#!" They're still the bad people, not you. :)

I guess it's also because I'm already drowning in Amiga projects that I'm trying to finish, private messages and emails that need to be replied to, and a whole load of other things people are relying on me to do for them that makes me hesitant to take on yet another mission when I'm almost suicidal with stress and depression already.

You do know that stress is God's way of telling you "don't do that." :) It's good that you're being nice, but maybe you better put a little more selfishness in your life. Not too much, mind ya, but maybe a little...

As to porting, maybe Saimon69 can ask...

I'm sorry for complaining, this thread definitely isn't the place for it, but thanks for the support you guys.

As for more must-have OS-friendly applications, I should have definitely mentioned the ones I use almost every day, but they might not be used by everyone since they're all internet apps:

SabreMSN
http://wookiechat.amigarevolution.com/sabremsn/index.html
SabreMSN is an Amiga MSN client that uses MUI for its GUI.

WookieChat
http://wookiechat.amigarevolution.com/wookiechat/index.html
WookieChat is a fully featured IRC client in the tradition of AmIRC and XChat.

AmiMSN
http://members.iinet.net.au/~trebs/AmiMSN/
A tiny MSN client programmed in ARexx which runs in a Shell window or as a script in WookieChat or AmIRC.

Dynamite
http://amisource.de/dynamite/
The online-multiplayer Bomberman clone that no online Amiga user should be without.
