Do you mean a normal boring standard IDE harddisc ??? Depends on what controller you have got on your A500. Most A500´s have got a scsi controller that only accept scsi devices. If your IBM harddisc happens to be scsi too then it will not be any problem. What OS do you have ?? Or better, what kickstart chip ?? There are IDE controllers for the A500 but they are harder to find because IDE puts a heavy load on the processor and, no hard feelings, the A500´s 68000 processor is not the fastest in the world ...

A600 with built in IDE controller ?? Should be a piece of cake to install an IDE hd. Just hook it up and use HDtoolbox to recognize and install the hd, reboot and then format it ... piece of cake ... been there, done that ..

A500-switch ?
/me tries to imagine THAT  ;-)

O.k. serious:
I assume you got an A600 with a ROM-switcher that let's you select either
2.0 or an 1.3-ROM.

The A600 can take 2.5" IDE-disks out of the box (you'll need a cable too), or
3.5" ones (thats the normal size) with a special adapter (available from Vesalia)

You won't be able to use more than 4GB with the 2.0 ROM, and I'm afraid but there
is no inbuilt HD-support in the 1.3-ROM (and I doubt you will find anything on
Aminet either).
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else
