Getting an A1200
« on: June 07, 2011, 07:07:37 PM »
It is an Escom A1200, with CF as Hdd. Should I be concerned about its floppy drive's incompatibility with some games? I have an A600HD and for some reason, when I convert my .ADF games/demos into real Amiga floppy diskettes, most often that not, it can not play them back, or I get weird graphical glitches (mostly in demos). I hope that this A1200 can play them back with no issues. My WinUAE can play these same games/demos with no issue, so I know that they are not corrupted files.

Also is there a list of A1200 non-compatible games (A500 games that that are not compatible with A1200)?

Your input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Kind Regards,
CodeHunter

Go for WHDload, and there will be very little you can't do!

But yeah, many older 1.2/1.3 dependent games just won't work on a 1200 right off of the original (or pirated) floppy.  Too many to make a list.

Dang! Should I get an A500 instead then? I mean I like the idea of WHDLOAD, but I can do a similar thing on my PC using WinUAE. I love to use good ol' floppies and hear the clanky noise! Oh, well, I will get it, but I need to find an A500 as well!
Kind Regards,

My experience is that games work more often than not.
If you still want the "classic" experience, get relokick and it'll sort out a lot of the rest.

A 1200 can play most 500 games, but nothing will make a 500 play an AGA game :)

For pre AGA software the A500 is the most compatible. Loads of games and demos were hard coded to use memory at $c00000. Which you can't work round unless you have an accelerator with an mmu.

there is no such list
however the A1200 can play about 98% of the A500 games I calculate
you must use a convenient degrader like relokick 1.4
some old games even fail...they requires kick 1.2.....only will works there and even will fail on the A500 with kick 1.3

@ CodeHunter

Out of some 5000 odd Amiga games I've yet to find one that couldn't be made to work on an A1200... :)

As you're already using adf's with WinUAE, you should have very few problems getting them to run on the A1200 with things like WHDLoad, JST and all the other degrader utils available... :)

You will find very, very few Amiga games that can't run on the A1200 and if you really want to you could even learn how write your own WHDLoad slave files.. :)

Suffice to say if using adf's then you should with a wee bit of time and patience get them all running on your A1200 no problem... :)

I have yet to find a game that won't run on my A4000 either, but a lot won't play on my A2000 :D
