Atari version of Duke Nukem 3D
« on: May 25, 2011, 01:08:51 PM »
Hi

Amiga version of Duke Nukem has some problems.

It is slow :( and can't turn off aimin up and down :( that is useles feature wich just slows down game even more :( It is possible shoot enemy wich is not line of sight, Duke 3d is pseudo 3d game so it doesn't care how low or high you aim with your gun.

I belive that Atari Falcon version is more sophisticated? Sources of atari version are here:

http://mikro.naprvyraz.sk/download.htm

Maybe somebody could check sources and say if ít is easy task or not? After that I would know is it realistic task? Could be, because 68060 and it supports both RGP and VGA and sources are C

Please note that Duke Nuken is in topics again :)

I never understood the functionality and means of the aiming up and down in the amiga ports of doom or duke3d. The original game wasn't using it, so you cant add a new functionality. It only serves, as you says, for slowing the engine down.

The PC version was one of the first 3D shooters to have mouse aim. Not that it does anything, but I remember thinking it was the coolest feature evar.:afro:

Then you haven't played Duke3D seriously ever. Major strategical game elements all depend on the mouse aiming, especially in multiplayer. I was a top player back then .
Mouse aiming or aiming up and down with keys allows you to fire strategical RPG or Devastator shots at windows or doors you suspect an enemy will turn up in as well as into flats and hiding places your enemy is hiding in, chucking pipebombs into small windows high up, placing laser tripmines at various heights on walls, not to mention orientating yourself in levels with huge height differences.

there have some experiments with pc keyboard and mouse vs console players game pad. However usually mouse keyboard players win with there more precise shots.

Doom I can agree with in regards to up and down aiming being a little redundant, but I definately agree with the others that full mouse aiming is a big part of duke3d's gameplay.
As for Duke3d, in my humble opinion it'd be a worthwhile endevor for an inclined 68k develeoper. It (duke3d) wasnt much heavier on hardware than Doom in thier original pc forms, so following that idea it could be much better than it currently is (even quake2 is faster on 68k than 68k duke3d).
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Could easily thinkthat Atari version should be easy task to port Amiga.

From site " It was planned to reuse some stuff from Amiga port but the assembler part was quite unoptimized so I decided to use C sources only."

Aiming up and down only matters if target is much lower or upper. As I said shot hits to target even if I don't see it, if it isn't high/low enough.

And I would be nice to be possible turn that feature of.

Yeah, the mouse look mode was off by default on original PC Duke too.  I don't know what people are talking about it being essential part of the game.  On original old PC back in the day it was slow too.   Most people I know never used it.  A lot of people never knew you could turn it on at all by pressing "U".

On the Amiga version you are playing if you press "U" does it turn mouselook mode off by chance?

Back in my day, we didn\'t have water. We only had Oxygen and Hydrogen, and we\'d just have to shove them together.

You can add such a feature, because the game engine already knows at which elevation level an enemy is located, or it wouldn't be able to draw enemies at the right screen position.

Do you use FFS? add some buffers to that partition:
addbuffers work: 2000
and now it will load quite a lot faster (just like any other program that uses big files like shapeshifter/fusion/doom...).

PS:*If you don't have much fastram you can use chipram for the buffers

@fishy_fiz

it would be interesting if somebody talked with the Mac version authors to release to release the Mac version sources. Duke Nukem worked faster in Shapeshifter than in the native version*(just like Wolfenstein3D)
