File transfer between Amigas
« on: May 21, 2011, 04:26:52 PM »
Afternoon all :-)

I have an Amiga 500 with HDD that I'd like to link to my Amiga 2000 - I have a null modem cable that I've used for linkup games before. Is there a piece of software that would let me use the link to transfer files?

The A2000 has Ethernet/USB so it'd be handy to get all the data from the A500 for backup and a link of some kind would be much easier than lots of floppy disks!

Thanks in Advance

Robert.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the A500 has Workbench 1.3, the A2000 has Workbench 3.9.

I always used Terminus and Term for that purpose (ZModem-Protocol, as I recall).

parnet and sernet work well, but are ssslllllooowwww.

If you have scsi on both and you only need to transfer files a spare hard drive and/or scsi zip drive works extremely well

Yep, used to use parnet myself back in the day, with a home made cable and everything. At one point, my HDless A600 had a custom boot floppy that mounted ParNET and then used the A1200's HD for the rest. It was just as slow as floppy disk but at least swapping them was a thing of the past.

These days, I use a LAN and it's by far the most convenient method of transferring data. However, you need the requisite hardware and software for that to work.

Well, in my case, I have a samba share on my linux box that all my amigas have read-write access to.

TwinExpress is also a valid choice with nullmodem cable (available on Aminet).

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Speed isn't really an issue as anything will be quicker than copying files bit by bit on floppy disk. In Any case, the Amiga 500 only has a 40mb drive so there's not huge amounts of data to copy. Once it's on the A2000 I can get it onto a USB Stick or online :-)

Envoy is the perfect Amiga to Amiga networking product in this case. Very lightweight and designed with the Amiga in mind.
