Toaster Advice....
« on: May 16, 2011, 06:11:40 PM »
In building my Toaster system I realized that I need some sort of way to add & manipulate audio. Which hardware would be better... a Flyer board or an AD516 16bit Sound Card? Does the Flyer do what the AD516 does plus allow for more hard drive space? Is the Flyer as capable as the AD516 for audio control?

So far I have a Toaster 2000 board, Kitchen Sync & an 040 Accellerator. Besides an audio control - What else do I need to start creating full vidoes with audio? This is getting expensive!

Each time I add another peice to the Toaster puzzle It seems that I need something else.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions....

I hate to ask, but do you have a TBC (Time Base Corrector) board yet?  I think the VT has one built in but I can't remember...

*EDIT* NM, I forgot the Kitchen SYNC IS a TBC  ;)

Getting back to your topic, I liked the AD516 for the stuff I did.  Mind you I ONLY did audio and it came out great!  I could also use the AD516 as a normal sound card too so if you had AHI setup you could get good sound from any game that supported it.

BUT!  If you are ONLY doing editing, then the Flyer is geared to give you all the help you need.  Direct HDD access, direct connections to the VT card, software specifically FOR working with the VT...

That's your call.  It really comes down to how hardcore your are going to be editing on this machine compared to other activities...

Hope this helped!

Thanks J-Golden...  Yeah, I'm not trying to go all hard core with the audio I just want to create some videos with audio that will end up like commercials (with that old time 90's flair!). I want to create commercials for my business website. They basically would be subjects on background stills or video (how do I do greenscreen?) with titles and wipes with scripted audio (maybe some insterted sound effects?). So, the Flyer is the way to go?

Do I need this thing then too if I go with a Flyer board?

So, can I do everthing I want with Toaster board, the Flyer board & the Accelerator? Sure hope so. Thanks much for your reply!

The Octopus cable is only needed if you plan to house your drives in an external chassis.

And honestly, I'd ask around here on the boards before I drop $100 on a cable.

As for your setup, yes, system specs. wise you are set.  I would caution you though to get BIG HDDs!  The VT doesn't save data in a compressed format so drive space disappears really, really fast!

And the HDDs you hook up to the Flyer cannot be accessed by the normal system either so plan accordingly....

For the green screen, I know that there is a video editing program for the Amiga that will actually take a snap shot of what ever background you are using and only record anything that is different from said snap shot.  I saw a demo at a con and it was really cool.  If I can remember it's name (or some one else jumps in and knows what I'm talking about) I'll let you know what it was called.

Other wise, I think there is a standard Green screen program built into the VT software.  But that will actually require said green screen backdrop and no one on screen dressing up like a Leprechaun. :)

Total side note- I'm really into this old Xbox game called Steel Battalion and the giant robots in it are called Vertical Tanks, VTs for short.  So I've been confusing my self through out this whole thread, getting distracted by all that! :D

PS- I know I'm sounding all pro about this, but I've never personally used them.  We did sell, install and configure them out of our shop back in the day and as a Tech I got very close with all there workings.

GOOD LUCK!

If you want to house everything inside your A2000 case, including the audio drive and 2 video drives connected to a Flyer board, you might want to consider buying the pre-formatted solid state solutions provided by DiscreetFX, instead of using big, heat producing SCSI hard drives that probably would not all fit into the original A2000 case and therefore cause you to need that Octopus cable and an external drive tower.

And "YES", setting up any kind of video editing system can get expensive.  If you want cheap, you should just use a newer PC system and any USB or FireWire camcorder with free, or cheap software editors.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Wow, this is great info... Pre-formatted solid state solutions provided by DiscreetFX sounds awesome! Link to the product perhaps? I do have a few 10GB - 10RPM SCSI drives that I've had stashed away for awhile but solid state sounds like the way to go!

Didn't say I wanted to go cheap... but all the pieces do add up in $$. Besides everthing I've read about the PC editing systems don't even compare to the Amiga Toaster even for it's age. I also checked pricing for a PC editing system - to do the same on a PC as a Toaster system would run between 12K & 15K (for the supposed good stuff that is). A tri-caster would be awesome though! And, I'm having a lot of fun with the Miggys! Not to mention I enjoy the company of A.Org peeps!

OK, so a flyer board it is! A hunting I will go for one! So close! Thanks again for all the great info!

EDIT: Can I still get a Flyer board thru DiscreteFX?

Getting into toaster/flyer video was always expensive, even now with years old hardware, it's still a lot of money (buy it, it only hurts for years)

Still using amiga/newtek after all these yrs,
