My games crash my A500HD every time
« on: December 22, 2003, 10:56:04 PM »
Hi,

let my start out with my configs. I have an A500 with a GVP HD8+ with 8 MB ram, and an A500 with a Commodore Hard Drive Plus with 2 MB, and the problems is the same on both...

When I try to run some games, for instance Wings and Ducktales, it will always crash my machine, and I don't know why. The guru always say something about #80000003 or 4, but I can't find the solution in any GURU guide. Several times it has also crashed only when copyng files from disk to harddrive through Shell.

I can't run all games under os1.3 neither, but if I softkick to 2.0 I can almost run them all on the harddrive, but some still crash the machine.

Shouldn't Wings and Ducktales run perfectly on a A500 with harddrive and kickstart 1.3? Can anyone help me with my problem?

Yep... they should run perfectly.... From the floppies.  A lot of the early games didn't work very well from HD, though.  Even some that have installers in the archive.

Other possibilities for crashes would be trying to run PAL games in  NTSC mode, (or vice-versa).  Also, if you are trying to load games from your workbench, you may have a patch that the game doesn't like, or you may not have enough free chip-ram.

I used to have a GVP HD/RAM expansion and I recall quite a few games wouldn't work if I left the RAM enabled -- doesn't your GVP have a slider switch on the top to disable the RAM?
If I have military spec stuff listed on eBay, you can find it here  :-)

No, but I have a switch that allow me to go to floppy mode, instead of loading Workbench.

I had both games runing under OS1.3 half a year ago, without any of the problems mentioned. Now I have switched motherboard in both computers because they both had bigger slot expansions, and all of a sudden they give me these strange crashes. Maybe OS1.3 can't handle the ram expansions.

Well, as most problems go away when I softkick to kick2.0 I better install it permanently. Anyone know how to make a boot script that checks for rom version? Maybe something with if, else, lab and skip?

Well, I have put focus on my A500 with a ICD 1 MB ram expansion, and a Commodore Hard Drive Plus with 2 MB ram. I have installed the Gary adaptor in the Gary socket in order to get all the ram working.

I found GUI-GURU on one of my harddrives and I have looked up all the gurus the computer gives me, when running games off the harddrive. Every guru gives me that it's a CPU exception. It's a standard 68000 cpu, and it's fully working. I have tried inserting an other CPU but it still does the same.

Could it be the ram expansion in the A500 and the Kickstart 1.3 that can't handle the Gary adaptor?
