Which PPC 603 wascompatible with the G3
« on: December 22, 2003, 02:59:55 PM »
Pretty much that, does anyone know wich PPC603 model was compatible with the G3? Has anyone tried out to put a socket in a BPPC and stick a G3 in it? I think the voltages were different? Do you think it's feasible at all?... Someday I'm gonna get low end BPPC and get it to some electronics store for them to put a socket on it....

P.S. I know the motorola site, but I'm asking about personal experience, has anyone really fiddle with this, or knows if it would be possible

I didnt realise the G3 was pin comptatible with the G3.

That's interesting. If it worked it wuld be impressive, but I wouldn't expect a huge speed increase - even the 603 is held back by the memory bus on the blizzardPPC. You could probably clock it to 300MHz using 60MHz / x5 multiplier.

Hardware aside, under warpos, you'd probably need to roll your own warpHW.library for it too - pin/voltage compatible or not, the supervisor model of the chip probably isn't going to be the same.

Its not impossible that the supervisor mode was compatible - just unusual.

There was a guy who got a 300MHz 603e from an old powermac on his card. Im not sure but it might have been that Ponos2D feller (haven't seen him for *ages*)...

Not sure if that's general. THe G3 has a much bigger cache.
Do you remember who it was lempkee? I like this kind of stuff... ;-)

If my memory serves me right, IBM/Motorola manufactured PPC 604s with clockspeeds of up to 400MHz? If they were manufactured with a smaller/more efficient process leading to a reasonable power consumption it should theoretically be able to fit one of those on a CyberStormPPC. Should it draw too much power though there would be some frying-time of the power-supply lines though..

Sounds like a Grill'n Time!!!

BTW if you ever finalize your evil plan, make sure to take some pictures of this card before/after plugging it, and feeding power.. Take some pics of your miggy too :-D  :-D

This would be a great position on A.org photo album..

The 603e's bus was compatible with the 7x0 series (aka G3) however the pinouts were not identical.

I'm not sure and you can correct me here, if I'm totally wrong... but I'm pretty certain, as certain as anyone can be about these things... that the G3 is pin compatible with the G3 ;-)
