Tin Foil
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:35:51 PM »
Does tin foil block anything? Can it be used to shield cables or is it all just a big collective myth / assumption?

I see tin foil like stuff inside cables, but it has some different qualities too, kinda plastic and light. Or is something different all together?

Ok, well after some amusing youtube videos, and Wikipedia, there is merit to
using it to block radio frequencies. And microwaves too. Um, not so much on the nuclear radiation.

It'll stop alpha and beta particles, but considering 3 feet of earth doesn't stop all gamma radiation from reaching you...

If the foil is earthed it will shield cables for sure.

@Franko

perhaps, but you might need to connect it with monster cables to tin foil pants for full experience, and extra probing protection..

Well right now I don't have any fresh Tin foil and the hat I've just made was taken from a roast chicken I cooked on Sunday, it doesn't seem to be blocking out any signals but the cold chicken grease and fat thats dripping in me eyes is starting to block out the posts I'm trying to read... :)
