A1200 modding....
« on: December 22, 2003, 09:57:01 AM »
I hope this the right forum  :-?  But I have a 1200HD/40 with no upgrades all stock.. my internal floppy drive failed so I replaced it with an external but it was too big to fit in the original case so I started doing a google looking for advice on putting it in a tower case.

My problem is I would like to do alot with the 1200 but coming across the sort of hardware needed in New Zealand is pretty damn hard. Especially when looking for a good priced PPC addon..

What I really need is some good advice and maybe some contacts on where in NZ I can get my hands on some hardware. Of course the other option is to get a Pegasos or an Amiga One XE both of these however arnt available down here and would need to get it shipped which just puts it even further out of my price range :(

I guess I could go Mac or something they're damn cheap for a G3/G4... anyway any advice would be great as I miss the old floppy drive tick... ;)

Yeah I live in OZ, and I think you might be better off trying to get stuff from over here, by looking through the Trading Post or even tring to get stuff off amibench. I have to say though the really good hardware such as tower conversions and 060/PPC cards are near impossible to find in this part of the world, and very expensive.  My advice would be to try and get an A4000 thats been already upgraded.  I think you need to ask yourself realistically, what software do you need to run on your amiga that you cannot run and need to upgrade it for but even deeper, what do software do you really need an amiga for that you can't find on alternative platforms.  don't get me wrong i love playing with my souped A4000 but would i advise anyone to go and but one in preference to a G4 or G5 powermac?  No way!  thats just lunacy..as an example i use Cinema4D for amiga a fair bit and i just tried the V5 for PC.  ok the windows interface is not very intuitive but after an hour i adapted and found the rendering sooooo much faster, and the software had the features that i wished were on my Amiga version.

Or do a search on Ebay, search for "amiga" worldwide so not only in your own country. You´ll be getting a lot of music record titles from an East German recordfirm, but also everything about Amiga computers. Note that not everybody is willing to send outside his country !!

Thanks for the advice guys... but I dont really want to use ebay if possible.. Will keep an eye out for a hacked/modded A4000 ;)

Either that or just keep upgrading my x86 machine and start using my copy of Amiga Forever and AIAB again. Have alot of CD32 software (my CD32 console is lacking controllers) might try giving those ago.

Hmm, it's crazy what you can get a G3/G4 for... g3's are around $300 NZD g4's are around the $700NZD and Imacs /ibooks are around the $300 mark aswell... can't believe how cheap they're :) Who said Mac was expensive??

I guess another option is to wait for awhile and see what happens with the Amiga one XE and Pegosus :)

Thanks again...

@Lurch:
I'm in New Zealand as well (Christchurch) and have a bit of spare stuff, though no decent accelerator boards, and not much A1200 stuff.  Give me a yell if you need any commonish bits...

Have you contacted Jeff Kavelaars in Auckland?  I recently read of someone in the country selling some semi-decent A1200 bits but I forget the details.
I have a spare A1200 with Viper 030, but I'll gather you'll want something with a bit more go.

Whats the specs on the Viper 030? Haven't had much to do with the Viper cards. But yeah prolly need alittle more get up and go but then it's just a hobby machine d;)

Jeff Kavelaars? Name rings a bell but no I havent contacted him. Wouldn't know where to begin.

Is there any Amiga clubs etc still going in NZ? There is one club/company that keeps coming up when I do searches and thats http://www.titan.co.nz/amigaak/AA010000.htm might send an email to someone there.
