1084S/P is toast
« on: April 29, 2011, 02:39:59 AM »
Well, my 1084 is finally on its last legs.  It will display the desktop in a normal PAL or NTSC mode (Hi-res), but try loading a game (like Civ4 from the hard drive) and its all rolling horizontal bars.  It is also whistling like a steam kettle.  It had a good run, but I'd really like a solution that would let me tie into a modern display.  Problem is, there are no resellers selling the A4000 indivision, and the cheaper 23 pin RGB adapters only have shvs(scart) or composite out.  My display is a VGA, DVI, or HDMI only affair.  Are there any adapters out there that are decently priced, or am I stuck laying out serious coin for picasso/hoarded Indivision?

The commodore 2320 (Amber card) sd/ff will fit in an a4k (barely) and can usually be gotten cheap. Although I don't see any on ebay atm.

One solution is to use something like Amigamaniac's RGB to S-video adapter.
http://www.amigamaniac.com/RGB_to_PAL_NTSC_adapter.html

Then just team it up with a LCD TV of your choice. Many of the less expensive models also support PAL as well NTSC. Usually its the higher end models (like Sony, toshiba, panasonic and etc) that don't support PAL at all. I have 2 Vizio HD sets, a 47 inch and 26 inch, that both work just fine with PAL signals.

His S-video adapter has an extremely good picture. Probably 90% or more of the picture quality of RGB. Very sharp and clean.

Depending on the LCD TV and how it handles interlaced and non interlaced video, you should be able to run your desktop in High Res Laced and possibly Super High Res. Something 1084 monitors certainly don't handle very well.

I currently have an RGB crt I use on my A1200, and this is the solution I am going to use going forward. Tired of limited and low res video on the Amiga when its capable of so much more.

I sure hope it is the monitor that is going - I don't know why workbench will display fine but the games do not...

Could be a software issue - make sure Mode Promotion in IControl prefs is turned off and that you don't have DblPAL, DblNTSC, Multiscan, or VGAOnly in Devs:Monitors.

If you get a new monitor, a new version of the Indivision 4000 is supposedly in development - suggest you wait for that as a long-term solution.

Yeah - that did it!

Well, except for the tea kettle whine... but Im back in business :)

I am definitely ready for a new monitor solution to this guy.  I think tho the next chunk is going to a deneb, and then possibly a zoram.

I've got an old 1084s that used to make that ruddy high pitched whine all the time, apart from giving it a good thud on the case which either changed the pitch of the whine or removed it for about half an hour, I finally got rid of it altogether by opening the thing up and blasting the Line Output Transformer with some compressed air and then a tiny spray of electrical moisture repellant. I also did the same to big rubber sucker (where the High Voltage goes into the tube) by lifting it a wee bit and blasting and spraying under there... it's never made a squeek since... :)

PS:Remember if your going to do this the high voltages one this component can KILL INSTANTLY SO BE CAREFUL...
