Im trying to set up internet access under Mac Emulation (Fusion 3.2). Im using OS3.9 Genesis for this. Ive used one of the virtual devices available on Aminet called VirtualLink (vlink.device) although I gave nullsana.device a try aswell (with more or less the same results).

My Amiga is connected to the PC using cnet.device, and has its IP set to 192.168.137.2. Gateway for this interface is 192.168.137.1, the IP of the LAN adapter in the PC.

Ive added a new interface in Genesis called mac0 with its IP set to 192.168.1.15 and its gateway to 192.168.1.254. (to me this didnt sound very logical but the manual says so)

In MacOS8.1 (Open Transport 1.3) Ive added this information to the TCP/IP Panel. Im using Ethernet link for this, and have set the IP to 192.168.1.16, router to 192.168.1.15. Ive also added a DNS entry in there, the one from my ISP naturally.

Ofcourse Genesis is configured to act as a Gateway and Fusion is set up to use virtuallinkmirror.device.

After emulation has started I can put the interfaces online and send pings from Amiga and Mac side to both the interface IP (192.168.1.15) and the IP set in MacTCP (192.168.1.16). So both machines can talk to each other.

So why is Internet access not working? Tried using Icab and IE3 (no jokes please). Dont think its a DNS issue since I cant reach anything using just the IP either.

Is there something Im overlooking here? Im not really an expert on this matter so it could be something really simple? Ive experimented using smaller packet sizes / MTU settings, to no avail.

I've no experience with vlink, however, have you tried using the gateway of the other device (192.168.137.1) instead of 192.168.1.254? Make sure the netmask on both devices is 255.255.0.0.

I was able to get online with MacOS 7.5.5 and 7.6.1.  OS 8 never worked for me. Shapeshifter worked more reliably for me. So maybe its the OS 8 support in Fusion?

Cammy on here is pretty big on Mac emulation, I've forgotten more than I remember..

I had been online many years ago using fusion3.2 on the A4000/060 with both 7.x and 8.x mac os. under 8x i had to use the updates to get it working i recall(free download at apple at the time), i think there was a mac update for 8.0 to 8.1 or 8.1. i *think* 8.0 had a tcp/ip problem and didnt work out of the box for me but its beea a long time.

I would love to help but I have no experience with Fusion or Genesis, so I never said anything earlier.

It's very easy to get online with Shapeshifter and Miami DX, you simply follow the vlink guide and it works.

not to hi-jack the thread but...
What does one need to setup and run shapeshifter?
I've got MiamiDX!

Hi Michael, I made a post a little while ago about what's required to get Shapeshifter up and running which might be helpful: http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=609490&postcount=5

You can find more games and software at the Macintosh Garden website: http://www.macintoshgarden.org

With everything I linked to in my guide, I was able to run Photoshop in colour on my A600 at a very reasonable speed: http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=3457

thanks for the replies, at least I dont feel lonely anymore :) I will give it another try. and yeah, I tried setting the gateway ip to the ip of the working interface, that didnt help. I think I could try not going online with Genesis and setting up the interface entirely from mac side using cnet.device.. thats something I havent tried. Ive tried shapeshifter (and even basilisk, is it just me or is this really, really buggy?) but couldnt get it online either.

Please try it with Miami DX, as the guide suggests, and hopefully it will work. In fact vlink is designed to work with Miami DX and Shapeshifter and worked the very first time I tried to set it up by following the guide.

Yeah I fixed it. In the end it was pretty simple really (as always). I made the mistake of trying to use my Amiga's TCP stack from the emulation. That wasnt very smart. I dont think Genesis is designed to do this. Back in the days I used MiamiDX, too, since it did this job a lot better.

Well, I just didnt want to move to Miami so I tried something else. I just manually entered a new IP address in the same range as the Amiga is using: 192.168.137.9 (the Amiga has .2) this worked first time. Its just connecting to the pc (set as router) and the pc is handling the gateway stuff by means of network sharing on that adapter. So my router isnt even noticing the difference. Even better, since the Amiga is still online on another IP, I can use both Icab and Ibrowse at the same time.

BTW Icab is a pretty capable browser. Quite slow, but stable and the best browser I can currently use on 68K. (Netsurf is VERY unstable and slow, OWB needs blizkick removed and needs various older versions of ixemul and ixnet installed)
