You probably have a bad disk.
I recently bought OS 3.9 from Software Hut.
I had about the same problems you are having.
I called Software Hut and they sent me a new
disk. It worked fine. Since you bought your
copy so long ago, I don't know what to say.....
other than my guess is a bad disk.

@tonyw

Directly from the CD?! Haven't tried it but doesn't it also need a CD filesystem wich is not in the 3.1 ROM?

About the CD not being able to read the disk...
Indeed, I've had a Creative CDRom that would refuse to read properly some disks, but just from time to time!

I bought a cd from software hut and have been trying to install os 3.9 onto my a4000T. It has a cyberstorm onboard and I just installed a used scsi HD. Plenty of ram etc. The installation seems to go ok but nothing in preferences works, it "attempting to load program" or error #80000004" pops up. Also it claims my lha from aminet is not an executable. When booting up it says that amidock failed with error #80000004 that's about all I can recall.  Any suggestions? I want to get this puppy hooked to the web and networked to my various other puters, including two more a4000's and two Intergraph workstations as well as a (ugh) PC running WinME. Thanks

wellsir, actually I live about 50 miles north of Albany, but thanks for the reply. Re the 30 year old van...I hate to say it but my son used to restore the beasts and for the last 3 years he has been what they call PVS down in a brain injury facility in Kingston NY. Moral of the story: even in an old van USE those seatbelts! Is there a program to slow down the various messages or capture them, the ones that run by so fast as the installer works its stuff? I'm trying to see if OS3.9 actually installed everything. Another issue: the emergency boot disk often shows up as "unreadable" Do ya think this has to do with the PPC card? or something? I'm lost. I have a vanilla a2000, two a4000 desktops and this tower One of the desktops has a cyberstorm as does the tower. I'm running OS 1.3 on the 2000, os 3.0 on one desktop, os 3.1 on the other and maybe os 3.9 on the tower. Except most of the progs won't start. sigh.

I think I have that same CDROM drive, old Creative 12X beast or some such, plays audio fine (has built in controls in front of it) but sketchy butt CD reading, I usually just get read/wrtie erros with mine (at which point I tell CacheCDFS to try again)....

Also: 3.9 should be able to be read by the primitive CD file system on the 3.1 disks.

An 80000004/3 is usually casued by some program/command in your startup-sequence effing up, hold down both mouse buttons, tell it to boot with no S-sequence and see if that helps in the short run, if it does, than go thru the sequence and get rid of all the uneccesary bits (just put an ; symbol in front of the line so you can restore it later)

ED: this isn't too unlikely, as OS3.9 added in some bits that I think some software hates, I have been warned with the accelerator I recently bought for my 2000 to disable the rom patches in OS 3.9.2 ... (I use 3.1 atm)

@DGB,

When I put in the OS3.9 CD AsimCDFS opens a player window "prefs" close it, There are 2 icons, OS3.9 & emergency-boot.
When OS3.9 is opened I get 6 icons, one is OS3.9. When this is opened I get 3 icons, 1 is "OS3.9 installation". When this is clicked I then get the picture with other selections, create emergency disk, install from 3.1, etc.
Do you get that far. I have an A2000, see profile.
Keep at it.

Chris

PS: I also purchased my copy from Softhut.

I'm not sure what you mean by   " be more educated with who is attempting to help you".  If you are suggesting that I should ber more courteous maybe you have a point.  I admit to having a certain amount of impatience with those who seem to think they know more that they actually do and at the same time don't bother to read and understand what I wrote.    I recognize that most of the members here are far more knowledgable about these issues than I am.  I don't have a problem with that.  That is the precise reason why I sought help here.  I do have a problem with those who seem to have a know-it-all attitude and never seem to get the point I am trying to make.   In the case of the thread I started here it has turned out that no body figured out the problem.  I know that because I eventually solved it myself.  As it turns out, it was a mater of hardware.  I did not have the computer accelerated at the time I tried to install 3.9.  I installed software and a Blizzard 2060 and the  OS 3.9 installed without a problem.

I don't know if there are minor differences in issues of 3.9 but what I have is not the same as some of the members here have described.  That being the case it is hard to understand what others are telling me to do when I am not looking at the same things they are.

In closing, let me say that I made no attempt to insult or belittle anyone here.  I merely wanted to point out that some are not paying attention to the obvious.   That being said, I hope you will accept my apology if I have offended you because that WAS NOT my intention.  Consider this...  What is the logic in offending those I need help from.  It could be there are language translation barriers here that add to the confusion.  I strongly suspect that English is not the natve language of many here on these forums.  I admire and respect the efforts of those here who have taken it upon there own to learn a secon language.

Hi DGB,

no problem . . . .the real "problem" is that i've an AOS3.9 CD, that seems different from your!!!

Anyway, try to search if there is a dir called CacheCDFS inside. It has its own installer (here).

Mine is in:

CD0:OS-Version3.9/CacheCDFS  (where CD0: stay for AmigaOS3.9: icon on WB)

Good luck and Happy New Year
