OS 3.9 INSTALL PROBLEMS
« on: December 21, 2003, 03:53:04 PM »
Hi All,
Some of you may have read my earlier posts regarding resurecting my 2000's from zero.  If not, what it amounts to is that I started with corrupted hard drives and a bunch of other little problems.  I am happy to report that I now have a reasonable system up and running with a 3.1 ROM and OS 3.1 on it.  Yesterday I tried to install OS 3.9 from the CD.  This is a legal original copy that I bought over a year ago online from a well know dealer complete with manual, (albeit not much of a manual).  The install process crashed repeatedly.  Since I have been able to copy from the CD to floppies and run small programs from the CD I have pretty much ruled out hardware as the problem.  Each time I try to install it I got a software failure window that said "Program failed Error #80000003  -  wait for disk activity to finnish" and then gave me the option of "SUSPEND"  or  "REBOOT"  Since there is a " c/install on the hard drive as well as the CD I have no idea which one is the problem or if the wrong one is being used.  I am wondering if there is another way to go about the install process to get around this problem.

Hi DGB,

first create the Emergency Disk (from AmigaOS3.9-Installation).

Boot from the Emergency Disk (that will ask you the AOS3.9 CD) an try to install AOS 3.9 from there.

Do A "Full Installation" and NOT an upgrade.

Ciao

EDIT- mhhh!! i'm not 100% sure, if the floppy disk for the Emergency disk, must be a HD one.
Mine is 1.5 MB in size, but there are some extra stuff on it.

Been there, tried that.  The emergency disk function does not work either.  It could be that because I have the old low density drives that it won't work but I doubt it because it doesn't even try.  As a a matter of fact the CD is not as the documentation says it is.  On the CD there is no "CREATE EMERGENCY DISK" function to click on as the documentation states.  There is however an icon titled "Emergency Boot".  It opens a window which is really a drawer containing files that would be on a boot disk.  I may try copying them to a disk or disks and see what that does.

Hi DGB,

are you sure that is an original AOS 3.9 CD?

AFAIK, there is no paper doc bundled with the OS3.9 CD (almost not with mine) but some resellers, has done a little printed manual to help the users.

Anyway the "Create Emergency Disk" option ,is inside the Main "AmigaOS3.9-installation" icon.(that is in AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9 dir)

Start those icon and you should see the "Create Emergency Disk" option.

When you insert the AOS3.9 CD, you should see:

1-CDDA icon

1-AmigaOS3.9 icon

1-Emergency-Boot icon

Can you see it?

Which CD filesystem do you have?

On the CD, there is a full CacheCDFS (OS-version3.9/CacheDCFS)

Ciao

PS- try to run SnoopDos during the installation attempting.

FIRST ANSWER:
As I stated in my original post it is original.  It is a factory made CD with a commercially applied label.  It is not a burned copy.  I do know the difference.

SECOND:
Inside the CD lewel case there is a very small instruction pamphlet that doubles as a liner much the same as used in music CD's.  I'm calling that a manual for lack of a better term.  It to is a commercially printed liner that no reseller could have done.  You probably have or had one and just didn't know it was or is there.

THIRD:
When I purt the disk in the CD drive I get two icons.  One is "Amiga OS 3.9" and the other is "Emergency Boot".  If I click on the "Amiga OS 3.9" icon I get a window where there is a "U.S. Version Install" icon.  If I click on that I get an error #80000003 and it say's  Software Failure, c / Installer.

FOURTH:
There is no CDDA icon.

FIFTH:
I have Anim CDFS 2.0

SIXTH:
I don't know what SnoopDOS is and I don't have it.

FINALLY:
I know there is a better CDFS on the CD but I need to be able to install it to make it work.

Make sure you have--and are using--only one copy of the official installation utility, "Installer" v44.10 (10/01/99) or later. This should eliminate most script problems encountered during installation, including possible errors with the "MakeDir" command. Officially, Installer should be in your SYS:Utilities/ drawer, but it will also work fine in your SYS:C/ drawer. You can use the Workbench menu item "Window/Find..." to check SYS: for the location (and possible duplicates) of Installer.

Other tips HERE.

YES, i would tend to think it was the installer version
(not the official one as i did...).

If all fails then copy the files over by hand,  checking the version numbers of them (there were a few mistakes on the official release)
eg. check the new FFS version number...

If you check the info of the install-icon and you read "c/install" it's read from the CD. "c/" is the catalog on the unit that you are reading from. If it would have said "sys:c/install" or "c:install" it would have read from the harddrive.

It's logical that it reads from the cd as well since the user might have OS 3.1 installed with an old, incompatible, installer.

Have you checked that you have the latest version of AsimCDFS installed?

You probably have a bad disk.
I recently bought OS 3.9 from Software Hut.
I had about the same problems you are having.
I called Software Hut and they sent me a new
disk. It worked fine. Since you bought your
copy so long ago, I don't know what to say.....
other than my guess is a bad disk.

Stealth ONE  8-)

OS3.9 Install does not need a working system at all. You can install 3.9 directly to a blank partition.

All you should need is an IDE driver (already in your 3.1 Boot ROM) to read the disk. You shouldn't need anything else.

If you can't open the CD and run the Installer with no hard disk at all, then the drive must be unable to read the CD properly for some reason.

I'd try reading the CD on another machine, try another drive, etc. What about moving the drive from slave to master and trying again?
