A4000: best option for a decent mouse?
« on: April 17, 2011, 04:28:01 AM »
I have revived my Amiga 4000, and things are cool.
Except - the original Amiga mouse is that two-button one, mechanical and all.
I would like to use a three-button mouse (or two buttons and a scroll wheel) instead.
What are the best option / options to get  such a mouse working with my A4000?
Note: the machine is fully loaded (no free Zorro slots), so I can't just put a usb interface into it.

You can get adapters for most PS2 mice. I believe amigakit has them.
A lot of people swear by them :)

The best 3 button amiga mouse I've used is the one by Wizard Computers.  If you can fins one of these they are great.

Your perspective is perfectly valid, and many people are happy using PS/2 mice on their Amiga. But may I add my personal view of things?

I was happy with the old tank mouse for many years. You have to clean it regulary, but it pays you with pixel-perfect control. The smaller mouse that came with my Amiga 3000 was quite decent too, even though it was a little too small for big hands. I eventually switched to a trackball for my Amiga, as desk space became important.

I am not sure what the A4000 shipped with, but I have tried many different mice on PCs and Macs and only very few combinations will allow you to draw a "circle" without dents or holes free hand in a pixel oriented program. And I never needed a middle mouse-button except in X11 or Oberon.

So, maybe you should embrace the old rodent and give it another try, before buying a cocolino. Try to remember that smooth movements are better for your hands, and you will notice that a rolling ball can pick up these very well.

I'd guess you mean this:
http://www.jschoenfeld.com/products/micromys_e.htm

The good thing is that it has a short cable while other adaptors can get really long especially when a PS/2-2-USB is also used.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Been using the Cocolino wireless/wired mouse adapter for years now on my Amigas and to be honest I could never got back to using a wired mouse again... :)

Simply plugs in to your mouse port and you can either hook up a PS/2 or USB Wireless mouse and it's available to work right from power on without the need for any drivers... :)

AmigaKit - Cocolino Wireless PS/2/USB Mouse Adapter

The best mice I have found for use with it are Technika USB wireless mice (available from Tesco at less than a tenner), however I've yet to find a wireless mouse that doesn't work with it... :)

The only software you need to add to your StartUp-Sequence is, if you require 3 or more buttons and/or a Scroll Wheel, are the Cocolino.driver (which comes with it) and FreeWheel available from Aminet... :)

AmiNet - FreeWheel (ScrollWheel & Extra Buttons driver)

Using the Cocolino and even cheap wireless mice are much better in my opinion than any old original Amiga mice, no restrictive cables, better mouse precision, scroll wheels for easier use and support for up to 5 button mice using Freewheel... :)

Wouldn't be without me Cocolino... :D

This is due to how the mice communicate with the Amiga. In PC mice, the mouse has to decode the movement and re-encode it as a message to be sent over serial etc., whereas the Amiga reads the optical encoders directly, allowing it to choose when to move the cursor. I've always preferred the control real Amiga mice give, but I have to say that I miss my scroll wheel terribly when I don't have it...

Your view too, is perfectly valid.

So was I. But time has passed, and in the years flown by I have gotten used to mice with 3 buttons and / or scroll wheel.
I even remember that I used a different mouse (3 button) on the Amiga in the last years, but that rodent has been lost in time.

I used Modula-2, so I might need a 3 button mouse there too. I vaguely remember playing around with Oberon-2 on the Amiga as well, I wonder if I have that installation somewhere.

Well, I have used it now, and no matter how I try, it doesn't feel comfortable. It will have to be put back into storage.
