Any dangers of upgrading to 3.9?
« on: April 10, 2011, 03:09:39 AM »
So looking at upgrading my 3.5 install to 3.9, but wanted to see if there's anything to be particularly concerned about. I don't want to hose everything accidentally.

Anyone have horror stories to share?

First thing to do is to backup your Workbench partition. This will allow you to restore everything back to how it was in case something goes wrong. Do also remember to create an OS3.9 Emergency disk and boot from this before installing.
Most problems people have experienced is with the Boing Bag 2 update, but when looking at your setup (in your signature), I don't think you should have any major problems.

its slower imho. definately back up your current drive. dont forget to install the boing bag updates. its been a long time since i've ran 3.5,so i cant recall really how they compared,i do seem to think 3.5 was quite snappier.

Personally I like OS3.9 above all other 68k amiga OSes, but the default install is a little slower than other os3.x versions. With some tweaking you can get things much on par though.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

I went from 3.0 to 3.9 so can't comment on it being slower than 3.5.
Seemed fine to me though even when I as using a 030/50.

There is a good guide on this site somewhere fo tweeking performance and is defo worth a look.

Not really - you might fiddle a littlebit with the BoingBags 1 and 2, but with a more or less "normal" system it should work. My systems are running AmigaOS3.9BB2 with MUTools since years and very stable.
My personal view is: If you use OS3.x, then use 3.1 or 3.9, but never 3.5! ;-) OS3.9 ist what 3.5 should have been - I upgraded and never looked back.

If you're coming from 3.5, you won't notice the "slowdown" that people often rue about 3.9, since the speed of the reaction user interface (which is considerably slower than gadtools, but that's the price you pay for a resizable interface) is something you'll already be accustom to.

There are various tricks to squeezing more out of it, but in all honesty, I've not bothered on my 3.9 install. It runs just fine on my 040+RTG, as did 3.5. I can certainly confirm 3.0/3.1 are snappier but I doubt I'd ever go back to them for my everyday Amiga fix (I do boot them to test out stuff, but that's it).

Your safest bet is to perform a fresh install of 3.9 to a spare partition rather than in in-place upgrade from 3.1/3.5.  Then you can set about tweaking it one patch at a time until you have it how you want it.  Feel free to PM me for if you need any specific advice btw.

Thanks guys :) I'll make this happen tonight.

BTW... Am I going to be hosed if my install is from the first edition , rather than the second edition CD, or will the boing bags fix things anyways?
