Squeaky Floppy Disk?
« on: April 06, 2011, 04:17:16 PM »
I just got Deluxe Video from ebay, and was going to dump it off onto my pc using my a500.  I noticed that it started making this horrible squeaking/grinding noise, similar to what happened in this thread.  Now, as soon as I heard it, I cut power to the amiga and ejected the drive, not wanting to damage my only amiga disk drive (not to mention my only amiga!)  Now, I know it wasn't the drive, since when I put the workbench disk in, the computer ran fine, and other disks worked fine too.  The disk looks to be in good condition, and pulling back the metal tab was revealed a clean disk surface.  I tried pushing on the disk, and giving it a tap, everything they mentioned.  The disk in question is write protected, so I know it wasn't writing data at the time I switched off the amiga, so IF the disk is readable the contents should still be preserved.  My question is will it damage my drive if I even try to read it?  It never got that far....

Once there was a man and a boy in the woods.

Boy: I\'m scared...

Man: Hah! What have you got to be afraid of? I\'m the one that\'s going to be coming back alone!

Sound like to me the disk has got some dampness in it. It could really make a mess of the heads if so... :(

Is it a disk containing important data that you can't get hold of anywhere else or is it just a program or game disk that maybe someone here could supply you with... :)

To be honest if it's as bad as you say then it's best not to try and use it if you don't have a spare floppy drive in case it damages your current one... :(

Keep the metal shutter open to inspect the disk and turn it around one full revolution by hand. If the disk is clean and dry on both sides, it should be fine in the drive.
