If youre interested in upgrading you OS then I recommend using at least a handful of 3rd party apps/patches/etc. as much (probably moreso) than upgrading to a higher revision of the OS. FBlit and Ftext are definately things you should consider, not just to save chipram, but to speed up the system. Basically FBlit uses fast ram for gfx functions, which not only saves valuable chipram, but fastram is considerably faster than chipram too. Ftext is similar, but deals with text. The speedup you'll get it quite noticable. Also while the new icon lib is a bit faster it's not an either/or thing, you shold probably use both.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

I thought I had Fblit running and couldn't figure out why people were so fussed about it. It didn't do anything.

Then I realized I had put it wrong in the startup-sequence.. now it works quite nicely, and it certainly makes things snappier :)

Ftext didn't seem to be a huge difference but conserving chip ram is a good thing

3.9 Was a little bit slow on my A1200.  It's a 030@33.  I was so used to years of 3.1 and MWB I couldn't resist and went back after 6 months.  Maybe I should give it a go on my A4000.

so not really worth it for 3.9 on a 030/25? only have 6 megs on , was thinking of getting the zorror ram and then put on 3.9... maybe stick to 3.1

Don't know if this has already been mentioned but if you want to go with 3.9 you'll probably want to go with ClassicWB

It contains most of the best speed up 'patches' (just make sure you disable that nasty CyberGFX hack).

I also wrote this little guide a few years back but most(all?) of this stuff is in ClassicWB now anyway.
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!
