3.9 plus Boing Bag 4 on my 8MB A1200 with 50mhz 030 is faster than 3.5 running on the same machine.

Seriously?

Any idea why?

Do you have RTG or AGA?

It's a myth that 3.9 is slower or more "bloated" than 3.5, especially once streamlined and cleaned up a bit (something most Amiga users do by default anyway). With an '030/50 it can be perfectly usable, if not responsive. Years ago I had it on my A1200D with an Apollo '030/50 and patched kickstart, it ran great.

Just AGA as I'm waiting for Jens to release the Indivision AGA Mk2.

3.9 is pretty much 3.5 with bug fixes and some _optional_ crap offered along with it. I seriously don't grasp all the "oh my, 3.9 is so slow" mantra that some people seem stuck with. The only thing that can slow down 3.9 compared to 3.5 is picture.datatype, which is a "fat" (powerpc and m68k) binary in 3.9, but which is also easily replaceable. Anyone with a pimped up 3.1/3.5 install would also replace picture.datatype anyhow.

ah, good to know.

I guess my concern was that one site (amigahistory or some such) stated that a "medium performance" system would have RTG, which I dont have, and likely won't in any near future.

I'll look for a CD then. I've gotten a 3.5 setup and really dig it, but I'd love to check out "the state of the art" as far as 68K goes. This is stuff I never even knew existed back in the day :)

As far as the optional crap, what all is included in terms of actual functionality?
In other words, what functionality does 3.9 provide over 3.5?

To check the speed you can check one old test video of mine here (ACA630@30): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sYWUJIUyK4

It was done when I had 3.5, but now I replaced it with 3.9+BB4 plus a lot more stuff in a custom ROM that is kicked via MapROM.
Latest stuff like Cosmos scsi.device, exec.library, graphics.library etc and PeterK's Icon.library that supports even DualPNG icons without RTG... are full of win :)

Thanks :)

How much fuss was it to set up 3.9?

Bonus points for doing it without a CD ROM drive.

With 3.5, I managed to copy all the stuff to a compact flash card and run it from there. Worked great.

Nah I Installed it with CDROM (mounted a spare 4way buffered interface with slim CDROM and then removed it) but you can do it using a PCMCIA CF adapter as well copying the 3.9 ISO and mounting it from there.
Also setting up in WinUAE and copying it in the CF is also a win situation! :)

Just for the fun of it... I also made one experimental Kickstart that enables booting from USB sticks even on A600 lol...

It's cool, although it's slowing down the system overall and having  Poseidon always online isn't the best thing (since WHDLoad has issues  with it).
Was a nice test though.

Are you able to select or de-select the applications that it comes with?

I dont have any need for most of the extra app's and I already got wireless set up. I'd just be interested in the OS updates themselves.

Sorry, I can't string together a sentence tonight :)

What applications comes with 3.9 and are they installed automatically or can you choose?

I run OS 3.5 on an A1200 with a 4MB FastRAM card in the trapdoor. It runs perfectly well for me on that. A faster '030 with a bunch of FastRAM should make it fly. :-)

If youre interested in upgrading you OS then I recommend using at least a handful of 3rd party apps/patches/etc. as much (probably moreso) than upgrading to a higher revision of the OS. FBlit and Ftext are definately things you should consider, not just to save chipram, but to speed up the system. Basically FBlit uses fast ram for gfx functions, which not only saves valuable chipram, but fastram is considerably faster than chipram too. Ftext is similar, but deals with text. The speedup you'll get it quite noticable. Also while the new icon lib is a bit faster it's not an either/or thing, you shold probably use both.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.
