Another A1000 resurrection w/goodies
« on: April 03, 2011, 05:33:53 AM »
Inspired by TheGoose's thread on bringing his A1000 back to life, and not to hijack his thread with my work, I have brought my A1000 to life and done some... horrible things to it. :D

I went ahead put my flakey Derringer into the system and found that, yep, it's still pretty flakey.  Sometimes it will see RAM, sometimes not.  Most of the time if it sees RAM it sees the wrong amount, usually only 2MB.

The Derringer is the top of a CPU socket stack of three expansions: AdIDE2 on the bottom, with a Kwikstart II in the middle.

I'm not actually sure the AdIDE2 is working where it is, since boot takes no time at all to fall over to the floppy.  I would expect that there would be at least a few seconds delay on the IDE.

Congrats!  Looks like you have a nice system there!

Looks very clean!

Very nice indeed!

I would love an A1000.  The problem is that there so many duffers out there that people haven't looked after.  I want one in pristine condition, so I just have to wait patiently!

Nice system you have there.

One more for the group :)

Did Commodore take A1000 keyboards as a part exchange upgrade deal in the 2000/3000 era?

WOW! It's a 3 story stacker, now there's your pancakes! You already know this, but be careful, check things.

Mine is shaping up like this LoadWB,

bottom (A1000) -> AdIDE -> 1meg insider -> kwikstart II on the top

Maybe you have some weak ground. Also I found, I needed to file down the top of my IDE cable header, so it would fit better, board on top would be a little crooked, and not flush, not seated well.

"I'm not actually sure the AdIDE2 is working where it is, since boot takes no time at all to fall over to the floppy. I would expect that there would be at least a few seconds delay on the IDE."

What is the Kwikstart jumper set to (DF0: or ROM) ? ROM I would think.

Really cool!

Matter of fact, no I cannot! :roflmao:

@TheGoose: I suspect your suspicion of a ground problem may be applicable here.  I fired the beast up this morning and, after booting, was able to get the system to see the 32MB SIMM.  After which it immediately locked up.  I can imagine the puny socket is not able to supply the ground and/or power all the way up the stack which the Derringer needs to operate fully.  I am going to find good points from which to draw power and ground from the motherboard, and good points to which I can apply them on the Derringer.  Probably play with that later this week.

@Xanxi: Yep, you found it!

I am wondering if the order of the AdIDE2 and Kwikstart II makes a difference.

ROM.  Thank you, this is all your fault, after all.  I wonder how many of these "revived 1000" threads we're going to see now :)

Great to hear!
This may be more than just a poor ground issue (although that is a very real possibility) it may be a case of the PSU not having enough power. The A1000 PSU is notoriously weak - some more so than others....

@Digiman, Yep Commodore had a promotion called 1000 + $1000 = 2000. In other words you would trade your keyboard from your A1000 plus One thousand cash would get you an A2000. I know because I did it. Still got my A1000 but no keyboard for it. Still got my A2000 also. I probably got a magazine around here somewhere that has the ad in it.
