I have recently created a CF hard disk for my A1200 after a long while. I share this note in case it would be useful.

  • I first installed ClassicWB onto WinUAE linked to an hdf hard disk.
  • I was using Win7 (too bad :)), so I had to run WinUAE with administrator priviledge instead of -disableharddrivesafetycheck to mount the CF as Hard Drive into WinUAE with read/write option and UAE controller.
  • Once into the OS, I changed SCSI into SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=uaehf.device to recognize the CF card into Hdtoolbox (don't pay attention to the size that it is shown..)
  • I was using a16 GB card, so I had to install the SFS from Aminet with dostype  0x53465300, patched scsi.device (tutorial on ClassicWB  youtube channel) and again not pay attention to the partition size shown by hdtoolbox...
  • I partitioned 300 MB boot with FFS partition, and all the rest  as SFS (seen as SFS/00 into hdtoolbox) making sure to use the same set-up for all partitions (max transfer 0x1FE00,mask 0x7ffffffe,buffer 100)
  • After the reboot, I have quick-formatted the boot partition with Amiga util, while I used SFSformat for the large SFS data partition(s).
  • Finally I moved all the hdf files into the boot partition of the CF card with the Dopus, and changed back to SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device
  • I plugged the card into my A1200 and it worked out.  My fab Amiga 1200 was performing better then ever :)
  • A final note on the A600 KS. With KS 3.1 you can use any partition/card size (assuming you have patched scsi and used SFS for data partitions). With 2.05 revision 37.350 you will be somehow limited to 4GB. With KS 2.05 rev 37.300 it should't work at all..
There are several procedures available...you may want to take a look at the Classicamiga wiki, which is the one that I used.

I am not sure whether this helps, but try to change the name into ram:junk  so files are not written into the floppy...

Another WinUAE config will not help. Just do what roc suggested: your second hardcopy shows an input field called "File Name" which is prefilled with "drive definitions". This means it will try to save a file called "drive definitions" to the place HDToolbox was started from. This file is not needed in any way. So either change the input field to "ram:drive definitions" or "ram:junk" as suggested above, or simply drag the HDToolbox icon to Ram Disk and run it from there.

Also you should keep all your floppy disks (a.k.a. ADFs) write protected!!  There will come other obstacles later in the installation process where it tries to write to the floppy disks if you let it and will render them useless. The installation does not need to write to the floppies at any time. If it tells you to remove the protection, then you did something wrong.

Boot or better called Workbench, between 500MB and 1GB is more than enough, use the remaining space for Games.

Couple of pointers on when starting with Winuae:

- Always use a HDF file to start with, not ADF floppies!
- You can also make a copy of the HDF from like Classic WB, then format it within WinUAE and then setup a normal 3.1 installation using F12 and inserting adf's in DF0
- The best config is 030/040 setup with 2MB chip / 128MB 32BitChip / 512MB Z3Fast
- Speed; not standard A1200, use custom and type 90

You don't need to do a Low-Level Format, a Quick Format should be fine. Once you have made those partitions (best to call the devices HD0 and HD1 or DH0 and DH1) save the changes to the drive and reboot. The drives should show up on the Workbench desktop but still need to be formatted. Simply click on the icon once, select Format Disk... from the Icons menu, name them "Workbench" and "Games" and click on Quick Format. You don't really need a Trashcan, but if you want I guess you could have one in the Workbench drive.

Did you miss Cammy's post?

Please do not call partitions WORKBENCH and GAMES. AmigaDOS will become confused if you do.

Each partition has two names: the device name (similar to the drive letter in Windows) and the volume name (the name you give when you format the partition).  The device name is given in HDToolbox. Use DH0 and DH1 for your two partitions. Then you will see DH0:NDOS and DH1:NDOS on the Workbench screen.

NDOS means "not a dos disk" and tells you that these yet need to be formatted before they can be used. Select one at a time and choose "Format disk" from the menu. Now give it a volume name (Workbench or Games respecively) and click on "Quick format".

After that you can open the Install drawer on the Install3.1 disk and double click on your preferred language in order to install Workbench to the harddrive. When asked for your skill, do *not* select novice mode.

Like Thomas said, the drives need to be DH0 and DH1, once you format them, you can give them names like Workbench and Games.
Then start the install and do it on expert level.
