Amiga 4GB CF A600 Help
« on: April 01, 2011, 01:22:03 PM »
Hi All,

This is my fist post - hello everyone!!

I need a little help before I throw my amiga in front of a bus.

I bought a basic amiga A600 off ebay & I wanna install a Compact Flash Drive.

I have opened the machine and installed the CF & set it as Master. I have booted into Workbench 2.05 and I cant the CF Drive. Its currently formatted to Fat32 & I cant find HDInstall to format/partition the the drive.

My questions are...

Do I need a different version of Workbench.
Do I need 4MB of Ram etc

Any ideas?

I think the "HDinstall" application is located on the "install" floppy, not the workbench floppy. If you didn't receive all floppies(I think it was 4 floppies for workbench 2.05) when you bought it you'll either have to buy original floppies on ebay, or copy(piracy) it from someone.

I doubt that you installed this inside the Amiga and set it to master. The "HD-Install" written on the disk probably means that the software can be installed to an existing harddrive, but not that it can install a harddrive from scratch. I am quite sure that this floppy disk only contains software to read FAT formatted CF disks from the PCMCIA slot.

The Install floppy mentioned above was only delivered with Amiga models which already had a harddrive and with upgrade kits. It was not contained with Amigas without harddrives.

You can use this to install your new HDD: http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/hdinst

If you have no means to transfer this to your Amiga, you can connect the CF card to a PC and prepare it using WinUAE.

Hi,

No sorry I have somthing similar to this installed in the HDD slot

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Amiga-600-4gb-Transcend-CF-Hard-Drive-/160564573804?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item256264f66c

I have tried connecting the CF to WinUAE with no joy, I thought it would be easier to do this in the machine.

Preparing a new Amiga HDD with WinUAE is rather easy. "No joy" is not an adequate error description.

I totally agree there.. More description of the problem in WinUAE will be required..

Well, considering the number of people who have question about this, that might be a bit off..  It's not that difficult generally..
It does involve  (or it did when I did it) launching WinUAE with the -disableharddrivesafetycheck option.

Then there's making sure that you have the correct controller type when you launch HDToolbox... (Matches the type of drive that was added when you added it to WinUAE)

Then there's still the possibility that the CF Card might not be compatible, as some aren't...

It's one of those configs that sounds more complicated than it is, but I wouldn't call it easy...

What I would recommend would be use use a ClassicWB install onto a hardfile first.
Get that setup and working.
Then add your CF card in WinUAE, format it (4G, at least 2 partitions), and copy your ClassicWB files (all of it) to the newly formatted CF drive..
http://classicwb.abime.net/
They have several different ones, and I haven't done one for the A600 (I have an A1200), but the GAAE version might work for 2.0?????

Also, you'll probably need to set your maxtransfer value in HDToolbox to 0x1fe00 for the CF card partitions.  At least I think that's it..  Not at my Amiga now..

Classicwb seems difficult to use, why am I getting 'Volume Install3,1 is Full'

I started WinUAE from a command prompt using

WinUAE.exe -disableharddrivesafetycheck

The CF is SanDisk Ultra II 4GB 15 MB/s

Really??  How so?

The error sounds like you are actually trying to install WB to your WB floppy, not your hard drive, but I'm not familiar with WB 2...

OH, wait...
Are you doing WB 3??
Do you have a 3.x Kickstart??
I see you mention 2. and 3. in your posts...

Yes.. In your A600..
Do you have Kickstart 2 or kickstart 3?

If you're using the wrong Workbench for your Kickstart, that will be a problem later at least..

Those should work for installing WB 3 on Amiga Forever..
As I said, it sounds like your actually installing it to the floppy rather than the HD, which sound like it didn't see the HD partitions (or the HD) properly..

I'm not at my Amigas, so that's about all I can do from memory..
