Classic Amigas & Digital Cameras. Help!
« on: December 18, 2003, 05:31:31 PM »
I want to pick up an older digital camera (a Coolpix 900 would be nice) in the 1.3 megapixel range with a serial interface (I know it's slow, I have my reasons) to connect to my Amiga.  Has anyone done this? What camera do you use? What Amiga software do you use to talk to the camera?  Are you happy with the results?

I have an AMSTRAD DCI,  2 Megapixels digital photocamera. It`s surprisingly similar to the Mustek GSmart 2 camera, but I still haven`t found any info on my model.

I hope it works with the USB cards/stack for AMiGA, that I`m planing to buy with the OS4. If not, I`ll have to transfer the photos via SAMBA :-(

Hiya,
I use an Olympus D360L with my Amiga. I use a serial connection, which is slow, but I have a clockport 'fast' serial port which mitigates this somewhat.
It is a good cheap(ish) camera, in the range you are looking for. I do not have high-specification needs however, so YMMV! All I can say is it is good enough for me. No optical zoom or anything fancy like that, mind you.
Here are the specs

For software I use CamControl (bought from Eyetech). No complaints here, does what it sets out to do with minimum fuss.

I am currently using an Olympus Camedia C-3000 ZOOM which is a 3.3 Megapixel camera.

It has both USB and serial interface which is handy.

The good thing about Olympus digital cameras is that they all seem to behave the same with regard to getting images off them. We (Total Amiga magazine) did a feature in issue 13 of the mag which tells you most things you will want to know, unfortunately this issue hasn't sold out yet so we cannot put it on the site for free dowmload (all out of print mags are available in PDF format fro free), gut it is available to purchase (£2.50 in UK).  http://www.totalamiga.org/backissues.html

Also if you do decide to get an Olympus (recommended) the program to get images off it is freeware (digicam) and our very own Robert Williams (the editor of the mag) has made his own GUI for it which is very easy to use (thats what I use) and is available on the SEAL website here http://www.seal-amiga.co.uk/gallery/index.html

Have fun :-)

Hi Tenacious.
Use the program Digicam. It's on Aminet and it's Freeware. The cam you refered to is listed in the list of supported cameras.
Digicam is comand line only and  "Dumb but flexible" or something, like the author says. But there are GUIs for it on Aminet.
The program is actually a port from the Linux version.
You'll find it also nice that the program is compatible with any camera that uses that protocol (or OS?).
It' would be cool to see some more people trying it out on more recent cameras of the brand models listed as compatible, and add them to the list... Come on guys...I have a Sanyo VPC 550 wich is now old and it works (only the VPC500 is listed as compatible).
By the way, it says the program supports ANY device, so you could use USB...hey USB2 on a spider with a recent model from Sanyo, those that support full motion video at 640x480  30fps anyone? :-D

I bought a Canon A60 2.1mp that used compact flash (cf) cards. I bought an internal IDE cf card reader to trasfer the pictures.

http://store.compuapps.com/inidecfcflre.html

I mount the reader using MountDos & fat95 on Aminet. You use the shell or a file managment program (DOpus) to copy the jpgs to your hard drive. The reader will not work with cf over 64MB, but I've never run out of memory with 2 64MB cards yet. The card reader allows you to buy any new camera that uses cf if you have an IDE pot available & the reader is only $18 plus shipping.

Thanks everone for the info!  I seem to be stuck on the Coolpix 900, if anyone has experience with this camera interfaced to an Amiga, let me know.  It looks like digicam would work.

@sicky

I think that I missed issue 13.  Love your magazine, but wish it were better distrubuted in the US.  Thanks for the URL to the GUI.

@Sundown

Cool solution to reading CF cards with our favorite machine.
