My advice is still the same:  get a subway.  Now I have USB on my Amiga, I couldn't live without it.

I would also add an Indivision AGA and more RAM for your 1230 to Darrins recommendation too.

Perhaps a FastATA Mk3 from Elbox but they are a little pricey, although they are very good.

Personally Id never buy a bppc again and especially an '040 based one. Id prefer an '060 anyday. For classic use the ppc side is very limited plus restricted by the 680x0 cpu anyway, and for an NG option (os4.x,mos) its too slow. Sure the OS may run ok, but what use is an OS when the software runs badly? The only good thing about the bppc when I had it was the expansion connector with which I addeda Grex. Never again would I buy such a system though.

Hi,
@fishy_fiz

I agree, the only thing I use the ppc side for is playing ppcDoom, for some reason OS4.0 won't run on my Amiga 1200 with Blizzard ppc. Still messing with it though. I wish I could find a commercial copy of it, I would buy it in a heart beat. The one I got I found on the net. Probably doesn't work. The only thing that works fine for me is the 68040/40mhz side of the ppc card.

@darrin

How is the subway plugs into the amiga 1200 ?
the pcmcia port ?
how and where does it plug ?
Thanks,

Rednova

It attaches to the clock port and then you can run the USB ports out to the back of your A1200 via the ribbon cable (that blank removable plastic plate is a good place to put them).

One thing to check is that your A1200 mobo isn't one of the defective revisions with the bad clockport.  IIRC there are 3 variations:

1 version has the pins of the clockport fitted correctly.
1 version has the pins duplicated so you have to snap off half the pins (I have this version)
1 version has the pins on the wrong side and is useless.

I have the FastATA from Elbox and the damn thing is a bastard to fit and keep in the ROM sockets, even with cable ties.  It is certainly fast and worth the money (and I also have a FastATA in my A4000), but unless you need blistering speed, I would honestly tell people to stick to a cheap 4-way buffered IDE device.

I will agree that the IndivisionAGA is another "must have".  :)

I'm waiting for the Indivision AGA Mk2 to be released myself. Hopefully it will be this year.

Ive been using an external scan doubler and it's been fine, though it doesn't use interlace modes well.

I'll likely grab an indivision when they come back out

Dear friends:

All i wanted was to get advice about expanding my amiga 1200.
I did not intend to start war world III.
I appreciate all sincere feedback.
I decided to quit using my a1200 for 3d work,
I will instead use lightwave 3d on my pc
and the new aladdin pc version when it comes out.
So from now on I will mainly use my amiga 1200 for:
-painting -deluxe paint 4- and -digi paint-
-cartoon animation -moviesetter-
-game programming - amos pro-
As you see I do not require lots of computing power
and I already have a GVP jaws 030/50mhz + 32 mb ram.
I would like a new accelerator but as you see what I have is good enough,
but I would not mind expanding my ram to the max.
I will be completely dedicated to use my amiga for
painting, 2d animation, and game programming.
Thank you for your honest advice.

Rednova

For your uses, an 030/50 should be ample. Networking and USB would be the biggest things to get.

If you find a good deal for an ACA030/56, might be worth it (64 megs of RAM, and the RAM is faster too) but Im not sure its hugely worth it in your case.

He can network through the USB if he wishes just like I do by using a cheap PC Ethernet dongle.

@rednova I think you've got a pretty extensive list of options now.
And you didn't start WW3, it was clear Franko was being ambushed with the intent of getting him banned, it was mentioned in a "secret" group that PMs were circulating to try to get him banned.  So not your fault at all. I'm surprised the Moderator didn't see through the attempt but I guess they don't see PMs.... Unless, of course they were in on it...... (o:

Dear Friends:

Even though my a1200 had many problems, it is still run good.
I just decided, instead of buying a new amiga (like a 4k or 3k)
I will save my money to expand my amiga 1200.
For example, I would like to get a:
-new accelerator
-external cd drive
and anything good I can find.
If I save my money, I can afford this expansion.
I will expand my amiga 1200 !!!

Rednova

It all depends on what you want to do with the miggy. My A1200 has 3.1 ROMs, a hard disk, 4MB FastRAM card and a Squirrel SCSI with a CD-ROM drive. Nothing spectacular, but it's a nice little system.

If you want something a bit more powerful, I'd consider a Blizzard IV or similar '030 card with a bunch of FastRAM and the SCSI kit for the CD-ROM drive. This would make a pretty good WHDLoad system.

If you're even more hardcore than that and want to go down the 'everything' route, you can still do that with an A1200. You could look at getting an Apollo or Blizzard '060 card and possibly even a tower conversion kit with a Zorro busboard for installing RTG and other fancy expansions.

As ever, it always comes down to "What do you want to do with the miggy?" :)

Water of a ducks back mate... ;)

@Rednova

From what you've described what you want to do with your A1200 then the GVP030 board you have should fit the bill just nicely (though you can't expand it memorywise beyond 32MB, I've only got 4MB on mine and it served me well for years)... :)

If you really want a lot of memory then the Blizzard060 can go to 128MB or the BlizzardPPC/060 can go to 256MB, I have both and I honestly couldn't do without them for the stuff I do on my Amigas... :)

I'd say the best upgrades you can add to your machine are the SubWay USB Device and a FastATA MKIII Buffered IDE Board. The FastATA will allow you to add an external DVD/CD Re-Writer which is really handy for backing things up/ storing data or transferring stuff to and from a PC to the Amiga.

The SubWay USB is also great for transferring stuff just buy a cheap multi card reader and you can you any kind of cards you want (SD,CF,MemoryStick etc..) back and forth between computer or other devices. I would say don't buy a CD ROM (let alone a CD or DVD writer) to try and use with the SubWay as even though it can handle USB 2 devices it can only cope with USB 1.1 speeds and is no good for trying to burn disks... :)

Hopefully from all the advise you've got from everyone you'll be able to make you decisions now on what you want to do... :)

PS:Sorry for the ruckus caused in your thread, got a wee bit carried away and can only apologise for it... :)
