I am going to 'snip' the battery off the legs in a minute, and I'll get some bits together to clean up soon.

...it's not battery acid, it's an alkaline (mostly potassium hydroxide) - in case you've wondered how an acid can neutralize another acid...

I have removed the battery as best as I can without removing the legs. I ended up removing the motherboard from the case, seems how I have to clean the board I thought it was for the best. I'm going to brush the dust off and wait for my delivery of IPA. If I can find the money I wanted to upgrade the ROMs while it was out.....not sure that I will be able too though.

I have one lemon, and some IPA, and a tooth brush!

I assume this - I squeeze the lemon, and use the tooth brush to work that juice in! Then I take the tooth brush and dip it in some IPA and again rub and work into the motherboard......and leave to dry for some time! ?

Have I got it, or am I stupidly missing something?

Looks like the battery isn't too bad, and you have caught it just in time. Just desolder it and replace it with a lithium holder so you can replace the battery in the future without soldering and the worry of leaking!

Because the CR2032 (mainstream mobo battery) cannot be charged, you need to get one with a diode in-line to prevent it being charged i.e. http://cgi.ebay.com/COIN-LITHIUM-BATTERY-BACKUP-AMIGA-4000-3000-2000-/270662763944

There are other lithium coin batteries used on Blizzard boards etc that can be charged but I am not sure if the A4k mobo would charge them right so I would probably down the CR2032 route. They last 3 or more years before needing to be replaced anyway.

Don't want to spoil the ebay business but the coin mod parts can be had for <1.50 €...

Just make sure to use a germanium diode since silicon ones have a larger voltage drop. They'd leave more unused charge in the battery, requiring earlier replacement.

I've done 2 4000 boards neither if which I desoldered, the legs if not corroded are long enough to snip high up, clean, flux and solder a nimh compatible replacement in its place. nimh work fine. In the UK I bought mine from Maplins also Digikey/Farnell did one.

Regardless of the legs being in or out, solder wires to it and place the battery between the front metal and front case, near the leds, but not inside the case anymore.
That battery, even if it is 2032, always on the front between the metal and the plastic.
If your smart, you will use a thermoplastic connector so the red and black wire can be used again, while you solder wires also to the battery.

Well, I removed the battery back in 1998 and never replaced it.
The accurate date & time are retrieved from the web as soon as the Miggy has booted and MiamiDX is online. This is done by a tool I downloaded from Aminet - sorry, can't remember the name atm.
No more risk of leaking batteries.
I haven't missed the battery since.
