Help setting up a1200 networking needed
« on: March 12, 2011, 03:34:06 PM »
I finally got ahold of a pcmcia network card for my a1200 (yay by the way :)), but am having trouble getting it to work. Im using (or trying to) MiamiDX. I can see the amiga on my router, but I cant seem to log onto the test ftp server Ive set up, nor can I even ping the address from my windows box. Networking is far from my strong point, but I have used amigs online many times before (have used genesis before now, soley cos it comes with OS3.9) and until now had managed to get things sorted eventually. This time though Im at a bit of a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Have you gave the devices IP addresses.  Apparently, DHCP doesn't work reliably on Amigas.

pc: 192.168.0.1
amiga 192.168.0.2

etc etc.

also, have you opened port 21 on your PC firewall??

Yeah, Ive set it to use a static IP and have assigned it an address within range (not using DHCP). Firewall isnt a problem either.

Wireless or wired PCMCIA card?

Pretty sure I have. I can see the amiga on my router at least, mbut that's about as much "success" as I seem to be having.

Hi Tension,

That`s wrong, I use Miami and MiamiDX with DHCP and have had no probs, if anything it's easier.

I install Miami/MiamiDX and change the settings to DHCP and then go On-Line.

I've always used DHCP with MiamiDX and not encountered problems... Amiga 1200 with 030 and netgear pcmcia card to a Dlink wifi router (wired) , amiga 4000t to a linkysys router, etc etc

Did you run MiamiInit? go DHCP if u can with miami init and make sure you choose the right options

How can you see the Amiga on router? I don't know the way it would just "show up" somehow when not using DHCP...

Have you tried to hotswap the network card if it's the A1200 reset bug? Or have you installed reset bug fixes?

If it's working hardware wise, basically you just need to set unique IP address in the range for it and same netmask as your system uses and correct gateway address (router's) and nameserver address if/when you want to access net with name addresses (your router might act as dns proxy too). Then check pinging router from Amiga and Amiga from PC for example.

You could also test the system with NetworkBootDisk. It contains reset fixes and should be easier to set up than full TCP/IP stack. If you get it working with it, then you probably can guess what's wrong in your setup.

The Amiga shows up in the list of connected devices on my modem/router page, but I cant ping the amiga from pc or vice versa. Additionally using ftp actually says, "conected to host", but will eventually time out. Im using static ip rather than using dhcp.
Im really at a loss. Things seem to be set up correctly, but there's obviously something amiss. Something like that network boot disk would be useful, but unfotunately I cant write to floppy disks on my amiga (drive is partially dead).

Go to Hardware, double click your ethernet card, click on SANA-II parameters and click on Query Device. The hardware address (a.k.a. MAC address) should change. It is important that the MAC address is not set to 00:00:00:00:00:00.

You can boot that disk from RAD: too.

Thanks. The MAC address was wrong, although things still seem exactly the same. Cant ping the amiga from pc, cant ping router or pc from amiga. Only thing that seems to be happening is that my router/modem page is aware of the amiga (it's listed in the connections with correct mac address and ip).

This is really starting to annoy the heck out of me.

When I had an A1200, I too used Miami and DHCP without problems. Networking to a PC aside for the moment, can you get your Amiga online at least with a direct connection from the modem to the PCMCIA card?

You may have to delete your current Miami config and start over with DHCP, etc. Using my cable provider, I couldn't simply take the ethernet cable off of one computer and plug it into the Amiga. I had to always reset my modem and get a new address in order for the Amiga to become online aware so to speak. Didn't have a router at the time.

And someone else already mentioned the reset bug fix which can be found off Aminet:

http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/CardReset

...have you tried that yet?
