Do you remember your first time
« on: March 10, 2011, 01:29:02 AM »
when you decided to get an Amiga.  For me was when we were on vacation visiting my brothers family in the state of Georgia.  (I live in Texas)  I was still in school at the time so I didn't have much money.  Dead broke actually.  I was just woken up at about 4:30 am for the drive back home.  I looked out the window at the car and decided that i was going to get an Amiga 500 .  Thats it one minute normal and then Bamm gotta have an Amiga.  I seem to remember that it took about 10 months to save up to get one but I did it.

Anyone else have that kind of experience.

All I can remember was going into a store with my parents and really wanting an A500. I also remember a man that went around all the stores demoing it with boxes of boxes of pirated games and thought thats a mean job :)

Sales guy must have talked them around as I got an A500, was a sad and a happy day. Sold my C64C :/

I remember very clearly my introduction to the amiga. My older brother became friends with one of his teachers and would visit him fairly regularly. When my mum picked him up one time I went along for the ride, and in this guys bungalow he had a bunch of computers, one of which was the brand new amiga1000. I was pretty gobsmacked and fell in love then and there. From then on Id try to tag along whenever I could, just to have a play on the amiga. I tried to talk my mum into getting me one, but it wasnt until the a500 was released that she caved in and bought me and my brother one. We both stayed pretty passionate about the amiga well after most people had left the scene, but unfortunately my brother eventually lost interest in the recreational side of computers in general (side effect of working with them 18hours a day I guess), let alone the amiga. That said however he does on occasion surprise me with what he knows of the current state of amiga and he actually did buy an a1xe g4 some years ago (which I think he sold after delegating it to be used as a ppc linux server for a while). I had it for a while and was going to buy it, but despite a nice price I couldnt afford it at the time, so after a few months gave it back.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

I had talked my mom and grand parents into us getting a computer, and the 1200 had just come out a month or two earlier. The first games I got was Civilization and Turrican 2. The rest is history :)

Kept the girl until 98 or very early 99.

In hindsight, I kinda wish I had kept her longer, and just upgraded her.

Hi,

Yeah, I remember, my otrana broke down, and I had to get a new PC to complete a Lotus 123 spreadsheet for a credit union. I went out in town and bought the newest confangled contraption out at that time the A1000, especially after the salesmen convinced me that it could run msDOS programs with a program called the transformer. Took it home on a Saturday, and cursed that machine, almost took it back, couldn't understand why they did the things they did, but the A1000 ran the transformer well and it completed my spreadsheet program, and my $150,000 contract. So the Amiga stayed and I still don't understand why they did the things the way they did, but now I am used to it.

My first encounter;

Computer lab at highschool late 80's, populated by C64s.  My friend brought in his 1Mb A500 and the teacher did a 2hr demo session, showing games, apps, demos etc.

We were all blown away...

I knew I'd never get the money to get my own and besides I had only just bought my C64c.  But it left a lasting impression and I eventually got my own s/h A500 a few years later.  Followed by an A1200 ...and several more A500s.

I got my A2000 with the 88086 bridgeboard and an NXStar 1000. Had a 30 mg hd and 1 meg of RAM. I got it after watching an animation, cant remember what its called. An imperial walker walking downtown Chicago and blew up a helicopter. I paid $2500 for it. I actually sold my C64 for $800.

A friend and I saw the Amiga 2000 running Workbench and Ports of Call at a relative of his. We started borrowing the manual and bought acressories for the Amiga 500. We went into shops and wanted to play with the Amigas there, but they never inserted any disks. So all we could do is reset them (Ctrl+A+A) and fantasize about building an Amiga into a car. We were about 14 years at the time. It was summer and we had to wait till christmas. Christmas however was two maonth early ;-)

I remember seeing an A1000 in the electronics store shortly after they came out and was blown away. I think I saw Marble Madness and some other demo where it sampled the "We are the champions" audio. I begged my dad for one but he wouldn't go for it. I was still in high school so no job and no prospects of getting one as a computer wasn't something my parents would ever get me. I guess I kind of forgot about the Amiga, until I got my first job in 1988 and wanted to spend my first paycheques, and I believe the Amiga was probably the first thing I bought. An A500. None of my friends were at all nerdy so I'd never known anyone with an Amiga until I bought one.

When I grew up, the nerdy kids had PCs :)

They all viewed them as disposable though.

When I lived in Texas, it was around 1988. I was reading a game magazine that was dedicated to both Computers and game consoles.

Every time I read a computer game review they said,"It's horrible or so so on PC, doable on the Mac, but if you have the money to afford it, BUY IT ON THE AMIGA!!!".

Having read that a few dozen times, I knew what I wanted and that desire was confirmed every time I walked into a Computer Store in the mall, though I was not able to afford an Amiga until around 94 or 95. I began with a 500, then updated to a 1200 and have pretty well near had at least one around since then.

For me The amiga always had an excitement about it.  I finally gave up and got a PC  but it was never the same.  About a year ago I decided to get some excitment back in computing and got an Amiga 600.  The excitment is back.
