Boxed Amiga software deal turns bust :-(
« on: March 08, 2011, 11:14:33 PM »
So, my latest score of 26 boxed games for $70 shipped:

4-D Boxing
AD&D - Dark Queen of Krynn
AD&D - Eye of the Beholder
AD&D - Shadow Sorcerer
American Gladiators
Barbarian II
Bards Tale II
Battle Squadron: Destruction of the Barrax Empire
Day of the Viper
Fiendish Freddie's Big Top of Fun
Globulus
Joan of Arc: Siege & the Sword
Knights of the Sky
M1 Tank Platoon
Midwinter
Nova 9
Phantasie
Print Master Gallery I
Red Lightening
Sculpt 3-D
Sex Vixens from Space
Shadowgate
Space 1889
Starglider II
Syndicate
The Perfect General

...resulted in a total bust. ALL of the disks are bad. Not a single one of them work and I have to clean my drive heads after inserting one of the filthy things. Looking at the disks themselves, I spy minute little blotches of what is probably some kind of mold. I'm not going to make a big stink about it since I bought the things un-tested. Well, he never said either way, but I *did* assume they worked. $70 worth of boxes and manuals I guess is how I'll look at it. I can always download the .adf's or WHDload files for most all of these titles. Still, what a bummer.

Thanks yeah, the thing is... if the disks didn't have mold or whatever on 'em, I wouldn't even have minded copying cracked .adf's over 'em but that's not going to be an option. I do like using the original disk with its label, but it's not a super tremendous deal. My bad for not asking more questions. Just wanted to share a disappointing Amiga story with my buds here for support.

This is the very first large batch of disks that hasn't worked in all my years of collecting. I've gotten disks from around the world, hundreds of pounds worth at times that have all been and still are fine.

Hey Amigadave., if you're listening: the 450 boxed titles or so you have... any interest in letting any of 'em go someday?

No, this bloke's from Maryland. As an aside, he gave his fiancee the package to be mailed and she sent it USPS Priority. Cost him $46!    :(

I feel for you Save!  It makes you wonder what happened to them that they ALL went bad.  I don't know if I've ever heard of that before.

Right, like someone with a real good 'magnetic' personality hung out by them too long iffin' you knows what I mean  ;)

Doesn't explain the barely visible moldy looking patterns on the disks though. Methinks they were left in a moldy, rotten, undehumidified basement for years. And years. And years.

Oh man, sucks. Sound like you should get the Hazmat suite on. Scary to think the mold now knows how to play all those games...

You may be able to salvage some if your willing to open the floppy shell, and gently clean the disk surface with isopropyl.  You can sometimes pry/cut the halves apart without major damage.

I did this years ago to some very dusty disks and it worked on most of them.  I also cleaned the inner cushion with compressed air.

Could be a combo of damp (winter) and heat (summer).  I think heat is the real killer.

Not entirely relevant, it's the closest current thread without starting a new one  :)
Anyway, as for what Im talking about the game Capital Punishment was for sale on australia ebay. There was a few pictures and it looked in really nice condition. Unfortunately I forgot about it (as I suspect did other people) and it ended up going for $5.42, which I thought was an absolute bargain for a "rare" game like that in such great nic.  :)
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Yes, if all else fails, having original boxes with manuals is cool. I had a large Atari ST deal a few months back and got well worth my money in software. But... All the boxes with manuals I got I thought all had disks, but all are missing. So, I need to now find downloads and make my own. Was bummed but at least I have boxes and manuals. Tj
