Hello, I had this buried in another thread entitiled "Printer margins goofy."  The stats:  A4000D, turboprint pro ver 7, Wordsworth 7, and Finalwriter ver. 5 and 5.03.  I am trying to figure out where the problem lies.  It has been ages since I set up printing on a miggy, and back then dot matrix was a cinch.  The printer in question is a laserjet 5l Xtra, no memory expansion.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpl02601

It is connected to the miggy via standard parallel cable.  The issue is margins.  From wordsworth 7, it will print margins just fine but final writer prints way offset to the left.  Also, I am not positive which printer driver the system is using when it prints- turboprints or the hp_laser in the prefs chooser.  The spooler works, sort of...either program takes about a minute to "direct print" to the spooler, which then takes some time sending it on to the printer.  My goal is for finalwriter to print properly.  The other confusing thing are the many places to adjust print "margins" that seem to not affect the printing output.  The Prefs folder holds three different widgets to adjust:  Printer, PrinterGfx, and PrinterPS.  The regular "printer" widget allows me to assign not only paper format (simple enough) but also paper length in lines (WTF?), left "margin" and right "margin"(in characters???).  Print "spacing" (currently at 6 lines per inch) and print "pitch"(currently set at "pica").  PrinterPS seems more straightforward, but if I choose postscript output in final writer I get one line on the first page telling me I'm printing in Post script then many blank pages that follow.
Now....TurboPrefs!  It tells me (correctly) that my printer is an HP Laserjet 5 series.  It uses the Turbo_par port.  Everything else in the tabbed views looks like a normal printer dialog until "text".  There, we get the next printer "margins" box, very similar to the one in the original 3.1 printer prefs widget.  you can adjust left, right and top margins (no units of type given, just arbitrary integers).  Left is set at "1" right is set at "85" top at "0" and page length at "0".  Print pitch and line spacing are here as well.  Line spacing can be 61 or 81, print pitch can be 10, 12, or 15.  There is also a PS tab here as well.  I have no idea what to set all these things to for my specific printer to print correctly from final writer or any program not wordsworth.  Any help, advice, books, pdfs you could send my way would be great!

In Devs/printers you will have some printer driver files.  Some will be from Workbench and some from Turboprint. I found its best to have one or the other, not both as there is the potential for conflict.  Keep the Turboprint one, and drag the workbench one from Devs/printers into Storage.  If you don't know which driver is  which then you could drag both and re-install Turboprint.  You may end up with duplicate lines in s/startup-sequence or s/user-startup afterwards, so delete on of those by opening with ed s/startup-sequence or ed s/user-startup in a cli/shell console.

Once you have the printer drivers properly installed then you may ahve to adjust margins either in the TurboPrefs utility, or within Final Writer form the Page layout prefs (I forget which menu that one is in).  Final Writer may also let you choose which printer.device to use: the generic Workbench one  which is called printer.device or the Turboprint one.  Chooes the Turboprint one.

It sounds like Wordworth is using the Turboprint driver and Final Writer the Workbench one.

Thanks stef, I'll give that a try- I got some printing to work ok by adjusting the margins within finalwriter down really small.  I put in 1/4" margins, and it prints perfectly centered at 1" margins .
I'll get the printer drivers organized and retest.  Also, Postscript just flat out doesn't work.  Now it simply prints 4 blank pages for every one full page.

Well, after moving all the printers out of devs and reinstalling turborpint, there are no printer drivers in Devs.

It does print, however.  I am leaving the default settings as is in the turboprint prefs box and just adjusting the margins from within Finalwriter.  The issue is strange, tho.  removing all "margin" within the Layout->page preference box displaces the page right and down.  Adding "margin" evenly moves the print left and up.  I think I am at a functional point now, although it basically renders the actual margin numbers meaningless.

I think the best thing to do would be to get postscript working, as the choice for printing within Finalwriter is either postscript or graphics final.

Its been ages since I used WW or FW, but when I did I go the feeling that WW was coded in a more system friendly way and I never had any hassles printing from Turboprint with WW.  But WW and FW didn't each have the same capabilities, so sometimes WW was the better tool, sometimes FW was.

Isn't there a postscript printing option in turboprint?

there is, but none of these buttons seem to do anything.  If I tell WW or final writer to print postsript, i get blank pieces of paper.

Is there a postscript.device that you can get Turboprint to print to instead of its turboprint.device from within Turboprefs?

AFAIR, when you install FW and WW you are given an option to install -in built printer drivers, and postscript is one driver option? You might have to choose the postscript one?

It seems the only way to print postscript is by invoking ghostscript from the command line on whatever file is a .ps.  I am not sure how to do it from within a program.

It also seems that the HP Laserjet 5L is not a postscript printer, so therefore I can't use those drivers for it.  Turboprint claims that it turns any printer into a postscript printer, but I'm not sure exactly how that function works.  This printer uses HP PCL 5.

Turbocalc used to bring up the amigaguide by hitting help.
