Fresh Install of WB 3.1 on a new(ish) hard drive. Where to start?

Alright.  My 3.1 ROMS arrived today in the mail, and I'd like to do a fresh install of 3.1 onto a newish IDE hard drive in my A4000D.  I planned on installing BetterWB as well.  Things that need to be done:

1.  Installation of a CDFS.  Have been using AsimCDFS, but some ppl here feel real strong against it.  I like it, just because it hasn't caused me lots of trouble.  Also it comes with a CD player that plays music cds just fine.  I am open to other suggestions.
2.  I have no IDE hard drives that are under 10G in size.  I know there is an IDEfix or somesuch to allow bigger hard drives.  I have yet to read anything defninitive on how to go about this, or what exactly is meant.  I do not care if I have to make a bunch of partitions, I just want to be able to use my 10G or 20G hard drives that  I have lying about, as opposed to trying to track down a little hard drive.
3.  I do not want to overwrite the drive thats in there already, as it works just fine, and would prefer to keep it as backup in case of drive failure.  It's 3.0, but whatevs.

Main thing I want is a nice clean 3.1 setup.  A4000D is your basic '040/25 with 16M fast.  I want a good platform to be able to build up.

SO... my question is - what do I absolutely need that isn't on WB3.1 or in BetterWB (off aminet, etc)?  What filesystem should I use (FFS or SFS, or buy Amiga forevers issue 85 and use PFS3)?  Can I use any size HD with some caveats?  I'm not in a hurry, the biggest thing for me is to explore and learn.  On my 1200, I never really mucked about much with the HD, the software was preinstalled.  And by the time I would have, it was gone.  Opinions welcome, advice heeded

If you know your never going to need to store single files of just a tad under 2GB in size then FFS is fine, if you want to store really big files bigger than 2GB then SFS is the best way to go as you can easily store a dual layer DVD ISO image file of over 8GB using SFS...

SFS is free and is much better than PFS in that you have no 4GB single file size barrier and also SFS can support HDs of up to 64TB in size (if you've got one that is...)

Allright.  So, IN THEORY, I can slap a 200G hard drive into a miggy, build a 2G workbench, and then however many 8G partitions until I hit the 200G wall?

Can't remember the HD size limit offhand for 3.1 without something like SFS or PFS...

but in practice you could do as you suggested with SFS or PFS, but why would you want to limit the partition sizes to 8GB

For example I have two 500GB HDs on my main A1200 the second drive the slave is partitioned into two 250GB partitions using SFS, the main drive is partitioned into 26 FFS partions of various sizes and the rest is split into various SFS partitions of up to 50GB in size...

Did a straight up upgrade, nothing fancy.  I'm disksalving it at the moment.

EDIT:  DiskSalv got rid of the checksum error, now it keeps telling me that volume workbench is not validated.

Disksalv can validate it too, though I dont recall off the top of my head how.

well, disksalv 4 didn't touch it, so I copied everything off the WB partition, reformatted, reinstalled 3.1, and copied everything back.  Worked like a charm, except that DOpus throws an error that I need dopus.library v 21+.  Probably just need to hunt that down somewhere.

If I recall correctly, you might have to add a line:-
ASSIGN DOPUS: WORK:DOPUS

to your user-startup sequence.

(assuming Dopus is in Work of course.. it's been a while though
