Wanted NTSC Amiga 500/1200/3000/4000
« on: February 07, 2011, 01:06:32 AM »
Edit: I'm no longer searching. I found an A1200 for a good price and ordered it.

I'm looking to expand my Amiga collection, so I'm looking for a new Amiga that isn't a 1000. If anyone has an NTSC Amiga that they are looking to sell, send me a message and we can see if something can be worked out.

I'd like not to spend more than $100; I figure that somebody has an unexpanded Amiga of some sort that they would be willing to sell for about that price. A 1200 is really what I'm looking for, but what I really want to do is make demos, listen to chiptunes, and play games.

Unless you have specific reasons for wanting NTSC, for games and demo stuff, you will be 300% happier with a PAL machine.

The main reason I want NTSC is that the shipping costs will be lower, and that I am currently using an NTSC TV w/composite connections with my Amiga. Sadly, that is what I have to work with now, although I may be getting an Amiga monitor soon from a father of a friend.

Are you in the US? Might still be able to get a PAL machine from someone state-side.

Do you have an extra 100 to spend? If so, you can get an external scan doubler that works great with a normal PC monitor.

The reason I ask is that the majority of games are in PAL format, and will work poorly, if at all, on an NTSC machine.

EDIT: For games and demo's, a 500 or 1200 is probably your best bets. A 500 is more compatible with truly classic stuff, but a 1200 will run most, and its far easier to transfer files to and from it.

I understand that the majority of games run too fast, and sometimes not at all on an NTSC machine. I'm just trying to get a 1200 of any kind, and an NTSC would probably be my best bet, as I'm in the United States. I already have a A1000, so I can run a lot of the earlier A500 games.

i know there is an NTSC/PAL issue, but I have never had a problem with that on my NTSC A2000 by simply holding down the mouse buttons at boot and choosing "PAL."

What ROMs do you have in yours?

3.1s.  I thought you could do that with the 2.x series as well, just not the 1.x series...  I may very well be mistaken tho!

You definitely can't with the 1.X ROMs.  I've never had a machine with the 2.X ROMs, so I don't know if they support it or not.

Couldn't one just use Degrader?

Can it be switched to NTSC mode?

Sure, just like any other 1200, boot up while holding down both mouse buttons and pick "NTSC."  There's probably another way, but I've only ever used it in PAL mode since that's what most of the games floating around require.

You need to email C-USA as they are the only people apparently making Amigas and for an extra $100 they'll put another sticker on their PC for you that says "NTSC".

All part of the service apparently and you'll even get a free jar of KY-Gel.  :D

I have a spare Elbox towered NTSC A1200, but I'm saving that for eBay.  Might be a while until I list it though as work has been keeping me busy.
