Toccata and noise...
« on: February 06, 2011, 09:45:18 PM »
Dear all,

I am trying to setup completely my "lovely" A4000T... :-)
My new wall is the Toccata!
It works but... it's noisy!
The left channel is ok while the right one is noisy! I can ear the music but there is noise on the background (and not only on the background!)... the noise is in phase with what happens on the screen... if I run a program you can ear noise and scratches accordingly to the opening of the windows and so on... :(
If I remember well I heard in the past about this problem and there should be some tricks to solve the problem...
Can somebody help?!?!? :-o

I would take a close look at the audio connectors on the Toccata (poor solder joint, loose contact), and also for signs of failed capacitors on the Toccata and 4000T motherboard. Outside of that, google hasn't turned up much useful info on my end. :-/

I have a Repulse audio card that worked great for years on my A2000 with a PP&S 2000/040 card.  Then when I updated the CPU to an 060 card suddenly I got crackly noise when recording.

I also tried this card in an A3000 and again got crackly noise only when recording (either via analogue or optical inputs).

Very strange problem I can only guess might be noise on the Zorro bus....but I really don't know.

Sorry, not very helpful, but it may offer some clue.  Have you tried the card in another Amiga?

mmm... my memory is not so good but I remember I tested it and it had the same problem... not so much anyway.
I think I have to make the following tests:
° changing slot (the A4000T has some slots... :);
° checking capacitors and connectors;
° I am going to change Amiga right now... too complicated! :)
I will let you know... but I remember I read somewhere about something to do to solve this problem with Toccatas... ARGH!!! My memory!!!

I have the exact same problem with this Toccata I got from Ebay. Left channel is extremely low (when I pan AmigaAmp3 to leftmost side, I can almost hear the music) and there is a very loud noise on the left channel that gets worse when cpu is doing anything.

I don't know where to look for a problem. A4000T mainboard or the Toccata itself? It can't be the power supply since it was doing the same with the previous AT PSU. Now I got myself a Seasonic psu that's especially good on the +5v while under load.

I!m guessing that it has to be something on the Toccata but I don't know what to check. Even than only a friend can do the repairs on the card (provided he had time for me :P )

The cables are working. I also tried different jack converters (both mono and stereo) but it did not change this noise on the left channel.

Can anyone tell me what to look for on the Toccata? There doesn't seem to be any damage. The only thing that was odd is that the large square chip was not symmetrical. I pushed it a little bit and now it's symmetrical.

Maybe you bought through eBay the exact same card as the one talked about in this thread!

I'm guessing the original poster was from Spain (Lancia car logo in avatar).  Did your card come get shipped from Spain?

No. I am from Italy and my card is still here.
I could not make any tests.
Now I am very near to have a laboratory and I will get back again on the problem!

I got the card from Vicenza, Italy and payed a fortune! :) I'm glad I got it though. It is extremely hard to find one of these. I am sure I will fix this problem.
