a1200 into a commodre pc tower
« on: February 06, 2011, 12:54:12 AM »
hello,

I've bought a few months ago a commodore pc tower and an amiga1200. I was waiting for the new sam to install it to the commodore tower but the price is quite high and I have second thoughts about it. ( 1000euros + for a complete setup ).

On the other hand I am thinking of boosting up my amiga 1200 ( less than 500 for a good acceleration card, hard drive + sd card for adfs + cd rom + candoubler/flicker fixer ) and install it to the commodore pc tower.

So my question is what do I need to install the amiga 1200 to the comodore pc tower? While googling I found out about specific towers for amiga 1200 but I do not want to use such a tower.

Build your own one like mine out of wood, much more compact and better looking than PC cases that a family of gypsies could live in... :)

(just a suggestion... :))

You need to think long and hard about doing a 1200 tower conversion these days, most people seem send a lot to time and $$$ before coming to the conclusion that they prefer their desktop.

If you just want to play some games/demos and muck about with WB then you are better off upgrading your 1200 and leaving it in the original case.  There's some great new HW out there for us 1200 owner's to play with.   I'm currently building a SATA SSD/56Mhz 030/16 bit sound card enabled beastie with a chunky gfx mode for new game development ;)
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

I guess you've not seen pc cases in about 15 years then ?  ;)
These days theyre nice small and compact usually, even desktop towers. I've not seen a pc case big enough to house an a1200 for quite a while. Even my biggest case (my server) which houses 8 harddrives and 3 optical drives (2xdvd burner, 1x bluray burner), all nice and neatly isnt big enough. The a1200 mobo's are monsters size wise compared to 99% of mobos out there.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

I have a minimig with 4mb and an arm controller for casual gaming and running demos.

I am thinking about putting amiga 1200 into a tower in order to run a good OS 3.9 setup.

Ps: even though my amiga1200 in in perfect condition the case is not at its best :(

@ Fishy_Fiz

I've seen plenty even just today, it's the depth of PC cases that I laugh at usually at least 40cm deep, far too big to be of any use to an A1200 MB not to mention the space it uses up... :)

My case is only Depth 25.5cm , Height 43.5cm and Width 26cm, just perfect for an A1200 MB and all the goodies you need to stuff in it... :)

Franko,

your tower looks interesting! Is this a combination of wood and metal!?

Yeah they are nice in an imposing kind of way. I was going to get one and make it white and stick the original AmigaONE motherboard in there years ago.

As long as you can get the keyboard adaptor and the PSU adaptor it's no bid deal to tower it really if the case is large enough. And then you can use an A3000/4000 keyboard too.

If you wanted to do it DIY I have the pinouts for old ATX PSUs to Amiga power connector if anyone really wants them.

No metal, entirely made from wood (well MDF to be exact) and made to fit the A1200 MB perfectly... :)

It is like standard mid pc case, so it should fit. I think that the tricky thing is to modify the backplate for all the amiga 1200 ports. I will probably buy the adapters from amimakig but it's good to know that someone has these.
