I want to create an OS 3.9 Boot floppy to install 3.1

I want to install WB 3.1 on my 8GB CF card in my 1200. Only OS 3.9 seems capable of doing this as SFS has failed me, thus far, and yes I read the docs and talked it over on the forums plenty.

So what I want to know is if I can make a Boot floppy with OS 3.9 and use it to boot my Amiga, set my partitions then install OS 3.1 on top of that. If so, what files do I need on the floppy from the OS 3.9 distro to make it boot and able to launch HDTools. Beyond that, what tweaks might I have to make to WB 3.1 to make all this work correctly?

Or, is there an easier way around all this?

Both should work with an 8 GB drive without further patches.

To make the OS 3.9 FFS or the current version of SFS work with harddrive bigger than 4 GB you need to extract the newer scsi.device from the AmigaOS ROM update or take the one from BB3 or BB4. It needs to be loaded from startup-sequence and causes a reboot on every cold start. It also implies that the boot partition is smaller than 4 GB. With the older versions I linked above you can make one bootable 8 GB partition which covers the entire CF card and they don't need to reboot on startup.

Everything requires an updated scsi.device (or compatible*), since the filesystem sits on top of it. I imagine if you loaded scsi.device via FlashROM and then used a 64bit filesystem on the HD/CF you could get away with a >4GB boot partition, but that'll make emergency recovery all the more difficult...


* Other drive controllers are natively 64bit and don't need to be fixed. I think cybppc.device is one such device, not sure what the others are.

If you use PFS3ds (the direct-SCSI version of PFS3) you can use up to 8 GB on the internal IDE bus without additional software. For the 16 GB drive you need a new scsi.device.
