A500 Mouse

Knows nothing about Amiga... But was wondering if I could use a Serial PC Mouse on the A500

Bad, bad, bad idea.. I burned my old a500 mouse port one time.. Was omething like this: "ppsssfffffttt  poffff", a dark gray bad smelling smoke came out of my miggy, some chip on the mobo went to chips heven (if there any exists). Was about 50 bucks for repair.. So, think about it..

Yes you can.  There are several doc and txt files, some with pics, on AmiNet that explain how to convert a PC serial mouse to work on the Amiga computers.  You can usually find used serial mice at Goodwill for about $1.99.  Make sure that you get one with a "thru-Hole" circuit board and not a "SMT" circuit board.  A Microsoft mouse is a much nicer and higher quality mouse then Commodore's mice and should give you at least 5 years of trouble-free, good service.     :-D

Mr. Oocheck is the name I think. There also seems to be a Topolino pc mouse adapter but I couldn't find it at Vesalia or Ebay ...

I have a 'Mr Mysza'  ( got it from Software Hut).
I have an optical mouse, ( love it).
I wouldn't go back to a ball mouse again.

There are ways to get more life from the original Amiga mice, depending on how it was originally manufactured (seems Commodore farmed production out to several companies).  

Movement:  the rollers and ball can be cleaned with mild dish soap to remove the finger oil that causes them to slip over time. Naturally, you should not get the electronics wet.

Mouse buttons:  Most of my mice from Coomodore employ a cheap switch (a small square package with 4 legs and a round button on the top) under the mouse button on the circuit board. Over time, these wear out, but, there are 2 contacts inside. That's why there are 4 legs. On some designs, you can de-solder the switch, rotate it 180 degrees, and reinsert it.  Sometimes this works well until you can get a better quality mouse with real microswitches.  I have tried to put better swithes in the original mouse, but, the dimensions are different and the mod tricky.

The most tough mouse i've got, is the "brick" which came with my A500 (with 2m cord) well maybe except buttons, but it lasted longer than 3 of 1200 mices - those with amiga logo on them - they had a small piece of metal plate with roll to tighten the ball, instead of roll with spring (the A500 "brick"), and after some time, you had to bend it, that the ball was tighten well, and pointer was moving without bounding. And after few of those operations, this piece of metal plate was stressed too much, and broke up.. Now I've got logitech mouse, and it rocks..
