Greetings from South America
« on: January 02, 2011, 02:41:15 AM »
Hello everyone!

Like some other new users, I too signed up here after acquiring (in my case as a gift) an old Amiga computer. A friend of mine, knowing my love for retrocomputing, unceremoniously dumped on my lap an Amiga 500, a joystick and about 20 games. No operating system, weird power supply (he got the machine when he lived in the UK), no manuals, and no way to connect the machine to video output (which I assume would be the TV).

Given that I don't know anything about Amigas (my first computer was a commodore 64, and then an IBM PC Compatible), I figured that this was the best place to start what I consider a fun challenge: Getting this very cool machine to work. In particular, I need to acquire:

- The Amiga 500's documentation (user manuals, technical references, the like)
- Some sort of operating system for it (I guess workbench?)
- Rewire the power supply so that I can plug it into the power sockets we use in S. America (I believe the voltage and cycles are the same as in the UK, so the change is just the plug)
- Find out if there's a way to connect the Amiga to a VGA monitor.

After that, well, the sky's the limit right?

I would really appreciate any pointers to information, threads, dealers, etc.

Thank you very much.

Eduardo

Congratulations on getting your hands on one. Too bad he only gave you an A500. It'll be slightly more troublesome than if he gave you an A3000 or A1200. The links on this site are very helpful.

For hardware info, go to http://amiga.resource.cx/

Main dealers are software Hut  http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi

and Amigakit http://www.amigakit.com/

To display on a TV required an A520 http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/a520

Otherwise you'll need a Commodore brand monitor. If you wish, Amigakit is selling the Indivision http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=indivision so that you can connect up to any regular PC monitor

Unless you can find a hard drive for it, running the workbench off floppies is not the most pleasant thing. It'll be fine for games though.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

Amiduffer: Thanks for the great links! Let's see what I can do with this beast other than playing games.

Gulliver: Cool. Where are you from?

Actually, I'm somewhat of our opposite. I am a Venezuelan/Chilean who lived in Argentina (but currently live in Chile).
