The best-looking CD-ROM for A4000 Desktop.
« on: December 11, 2003, 04:29:11 PM »
I know you may think this topic is stupid but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sense of aesthetics is very sensitive!
New CD drives look awful in classic Amiga cases! Time to pick the right one. In your opinion which CD-ROM's front panel suits best the A4000 design? The main factors are color match, overall design and absence of any manufacturer or speed symbols. Oh, and please choose something from speed range between 2x and 8x - it should be silent too :-).

Does anyone have a pic of 4x Mitsumi drive? I can't find any...
Cheers...

One solution would be to buy any CD-ROM drive, and then change the front bezel / face panel with one that matches the colour of the A4000 case,

Like this...

Just an idea!  :-)

I have a 52x24x52 or something similar in specs, Sony CD-RW drive that perfectly fits in A4000D. It is just the right colour, and it is also 1/3 shorter in length than standard size so it leaves more than enough room in the back for the power and IDE connectors.

To my misfortune, I bought it at about the same time when I upgraded to Mirage 4000 Pro tower, so I didn't get a chance to appreciate it in A4000D for too long. :-)

I had a TOSHIBA CD-ROM drive (XM-5302TA), that would be ideal for your needs:

color match, overall design and absence of any manufacturer or speed symbols

And it's 4x. But the main problem is that it's so old that it may be hard to find. Now I'm using an LG 52x,  which fits nicely on my A4000D :-D

I agree with StevenJGore.  The best thing to do, is to realize that the front-bezel of most cdrom devices fall into two categories: 1. removable, or 2. flat.

If they are flat, one can simply find an old drive-bay cover for an a4000 and use an exacto knife and some superglue to doctor it up.  If they are removable, then it will depend on what it looks like.

In the case of the "pop down doors" of some cdroms, there isn't much that can be done (save for maybe cutting out a "door slot" in the cover.

Targhan

I love those guys. I live in the same city as the are and they are BY far the best people I've ever dealt with, their prices are cheap and they speak mandarin.

Sigh, I'm going to miss them when I move out of this God-forsaken place.
