ICQ on Amiga?
« on: December 10, 2003, 09:15:17 PM »
Hello boys.. got a little thing on my mind that disturbs me a lot.

STRICQ just hangs when it tries to fetch ICQ messages, it says that it is an unsupported message type.

Jabberwocky is very odd/weird to use, not very userfriendly, and I am only intrested in ICQ.

So, is there any alternatives for me? Is there any ICQ capable piece of util out there on for the Amiga that I haven't mentioned? Or does anyone know if STRICQ is being updated still? Last update was back in 2002 right?

I have a lt of friends that I am used to talking to via ICQ from a PC at the school that i went to, and I kinda miss them now, and I dont have access to a PC from home.

Somebody please save me! =)

No, it is Windows only, and no it does not suck. It works rather well.

fair enough, I was told that is sucked....hence the 'apparently'

I was thinking of downloading it (cos I have a load of old friends on MSN) and wanted to use ICQ as well, but was told it was horseshit
I like Amigas

BitlBee works, you can find an amiga port on Aminet.

Hmmm, i'm using Jabberwocky atm, it is stable as rock and useful. Yes, maybe a bit hard to understand how to set it up, but after you got it, it's easy as pie. I've tried STRICQ v2 few months ago, worked fine. It's just not that user friendly like it was in v1. So i really miss STRICQ v1. Jabberwocky doesn't even reach it in options and features. But as STRICQ v1 doesn't support the new protocols, it's not useful anymore. STRICQ v2 works, but still not easy to install and get it to work properly.

So i suggest you should try to use Jabberwocky.
Create an account for yourself on a server supporting ICQ protocol (list to be found on jabber.org or any other jabber site) and subscribe to the ICQ agent with your UIN and password. Then add your friends like this: UIN@icq.**.** <- put here after "@icq." the jabber server you have your account.

Example: 66356361@icq.jabber.at

That's all! :)

@cyberus

IMHO, trillian is great, but ICQ and MS hate the fact it exists and seem to do all they can to break compatibility with each 'update' to their services.

I wouldnt give msnm the steam from my pee on a cold day and ICQlite (since it went all ads) isnt a lot better these days.

You can use trillian with an existing msnm passport so no need to soil your system with that shocking excuse for a piece of software ;-)

lost of views on this. Well IMHO  :-) , i think it does suck...(this all relates to the last version i used)

the unistaller was a trojan (how handy), the smilies (although REALLY cool with sound effex [which microcrud has still to do]) only worked if the other person had trillian too  :-( the grouping feature was rubbish/non-existent, if i decided to switch from msn to trillian, it reset my screen name, my contacts, added loads of blocked ones, blocked all my current ones, and generally buggered things up. also it didn't support grouping of contacts across messenger platforms. I didn't like the GUI much but it was bareable, although the irc interface was utter crap.

well that's my opinion, and if you say anything to me, i will reply with:

so there

Sounds like an older version.

Perhaps your trojan was due to  using a cracked version of what is a commercial product?

As for the other problems you list, never encountered them. Trillian is updated rather often, several patches are already out for 2.0...

OK thanks for the tip. I will try bitlbee out.
Jabberwocky is out of the question, it is far
to complicated and linux geeky. It is a pain to
add new users and so on.. might be good for what
it is good for.. many different networks and so
on.. but... ... ...

well, i am used to irc, so bitlbee might do
until the day a proper icq client hits the streets.

 Seriously though - it happens :-(

-edit-

My original words didnt come out quite as intended either, but you get my drift - cracks often appear for stuff and turn out to be more than you bargain for ;-)
