Need some help....getting back into the game....
« on: December 16, 2010, 06:58:06 PM »
I am rediscovering the Amiga. Back in the day I had a Full blown A2000/030/8MB RAM/ whatever size HD I could afford/Flicker Fixer, you name it!!!

Well, I recently reacquired an A1200/KS 3.0/40MB.

I have added a GVP 1230 Turbo+ 40/40/8 to it.  I have no floppies for this system.

I ordered a new set of WB 3.0 from Software Hut, they should be in soon. I found out that my MacSense AeroCard Wireless PCMCIA is compatible withe the A1200.

My question is how do I get the drivers downloaded from the internet to a PC back over to the Amiga?? I can't install the wireless drive cause I have no disk and without a driver, no internet connectivity, talk about a Catch 22.

Can you guys help? I haven't used an Amiga since 1994. I have forgotten a lot since then.

You'll need a null modem serial cable. If you have a modern PC you might need an adapter of some sort to get an RS232 connector onto it. Then you just need a terminal program on the PC and on the Amiga.

Mount the HD with a USB->IDE adapter and use UAE to copy the files over.

The PC I was going to use for this still has a floppy drive on it. I will give that a try. I totally forgot that the Amiga could read 720k floppies.  Is it possible to replace the 880k floppy in the A1200 with a 1.76?? Will the ROM/OS recognize it?

Ah gotcha now... :)

We'll all the answers folk have given here are about all you can do with your current set up, so the floppy option looks like your best choice for now... :)

Myself I either burn the downloads onto CDs or DVDs or onto an SD card or memory stick, but of course for this you'd need the SubWay USB device on your Amiga or a CD/DVD drive...

There are also those PCMCIA Compact Flash adapters you can get now, but this would all involve you spending some more cash and selecting your prefered options... :)

Those CF adapters are 10 a penny on ebay and he's probably got a load of old CF cards lying around so this might be the cheapest/fastest option. (Note not all CF cards seem to work).

It's what I use, because I'm worth it.

There is also the option of putting your amiga HD into your PC (assuming you have suitable cable and IDE header) and using UAE to put files on it.

I did that once out of sheer desperation and I got away with it.

Yes, I recommend this route as well.  However, he is certainly correct too that not all CF cards work for some reason.  Why?  I don't know.

Yes, this will work nicely. You need an Amiga specific high density drive, though, and these are both (very) hard to find and expensive. The OS supports it without any problems.

My A1200 has one. You're not getting mine... ;)
