Another Newbie to the Amiga experience

Hello, name is Daniel. Glad that I had found this place, cause I just bought an Amiga 2000. I am interested in the amiga computer cause since I started using computers(since the 5th grade), I thought only two machines were on the market, PC and Mac, until beginning of this year have i found out that there was third machine that competed with the two others. Since then, my interest for the amiga has grown. I bought my A2000 barely a week ago, so I am almost completely new to the Amiga system. I had experimented with AROS(Amiga Research OS), so I know a good deal of Amiga OS.

I got a few questions that I love to have answers for...

My A2000 does not have a hard drive, I want one, so far i found these two item on ebay for sale, they are two SCSI controllers, one 2091 other 2090.  
-Will these enable me two install any SCSI hard drive?
-Which controller would be best?
-And will I need any software to install them or is it a "plug and play" setting?

Thank you so much in advance, and I hope to get to learn more of the Amiga computer system.

Hey! Always good to see another Amiga user in the USA...so many of the folks here seem to be across the pond, so it's nice to have a little balance :) amiga.resource.cx is your best friend when it comes to upgrade information. In this case, it looks like the primary differences between the 2090 and the 2091 are that the 2090 also supports Shugart-standard hard disks (not very useful in this day and age, but there you go,) but does not support booting from the hard disk (very not useful.) The 2091 can auto-boot, and also supports XT-IDE disks, for what that's worth (another format nobody uses anymore except us vintage computer enthusiasts.)

The 2091 is most likely your better option, but I do have a GVP Impact SCSI controller that you can have for the cost of shipping. It's nothing fancy, but it does work and supports auto-boot. (As for software, auto-boot requires Kickstart 1.3 or newer - I have a spare KS1.3 ROM too, I believe.)

The amiga is quite an amazing beast. When you consider what it could do, when it came out, it becomes clear why people speak of it almost as a religious thing

Now your an official Amigan your duty is to tell everyone you know just how much better the Amiga is than any other computer or console... :)

If not we'll set Doomy on you... :eek:

Either SCSI card is handy but If you can get a 030 combo accelerator card (SCSI, Memory + 030 Processor) like this one in canada: http://cgi.ebay.com/GVP-030-Accelerator-Rev4-COMPLETE-AMIGA-2000-/300500990780?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item45f7413b3c
With one of these your A2000 will be a quite usable machine with a 3.1 rom and OS.  U Should be able to pick one up on eBay cheaper.

Awsome, glad you all accepted me as part of the club. I will definitely buy a SCSI controller soon hopefully, and enjoy my amiga even more. I also hope to one day to buy the new AmigaOS 4.1, just need to get a machine that will run it(for instance the sam motheboards).

Where Amiga systems sold all over the US, or where they sold mostly in the nothern regions(nothern states)?I live in Texas so,  I want to go to the flee markets or salvation armies or goodwill, to find Amiga parts or computers. Where will be the best bet to find Amiga stuff?

Welcome!  (Don't become too discouraged by all the infighting here.)  Regarding used Amiga gear, your best bet may be to peruse eBay, and users of Amiga.org in the US have stuff for sale on occasion too.  Amiga was sold everywhere in the states, but flea markets are certainly going to be hit or miss.  I may be able to help if you need something in particular.  (I'm located in Connecticut.)

I know of at least one other Amiga user in Texas, but I don't know how common Amiga stuff is down there. You can check thrift stores, but a lot of them are, unfortunately, not carrying computers anymore, since they don't usually distinguish between older machines with an active hobbyist community and plain old junker PCs (and you can imagine how many of those would get dumped there.) A better place to look would be your local recycling center; usually they'll let you have what you find there for less than or equal to its scrap value, and sometimes the sorters will even keep an eye out for stuff for you, if you ask nicely :) Finally, if you have a local county newspaper, sometimes they'll let residents put in free classified ads - this is a great way to locate systems that would otherwise be thrown out to make room in someone's attic.

Yeah, I know ebay is the best place to look for amiga stuff. I also just notice that there is a marketplace forum in this website. Gonna check those out. Have any of you tried the AmigaOS 4.0 or AROS?  AROS is prettty awsome(thats what got me into amiga), hopefully the developer team can get out a very stable AROS version soon.

Yep, never gonna leave  the org, thats cool. I feel like that guy from the California Hotel song...


Dunno what setup you have but OS4.0 on a 240Mhz PPC is slower than dying from AIDS... :)
