a2000 wont boot without pushing CTRL-A-A
« on: November 30, 2010, 03:29:52 PM »
I have an amiga 2000 rev 6.2 mobo. a 1.2gig quantum fireball hooked up to a gvc 030 combo using OS 3.9.  I turn it on and it sits there asking for a disk. when I push the warmboot key sequence everything loads up. I've ran the memory tests and everything comes up good.  It seems that the hard drive isn't powering up in time for the system to find it.  Is there anything that needs to be in the wbstartup directory. Sorry for the noob questions but I haven't used anything scsi in years. and my background is solely in wintel boxes.  I'm thinking about putting the hard drive in an external enclosure and trying that. And I have all of the terminators for the enclosures. The hard drive is self terminating as well. Also one last question.  Can I unsolder the rgb adapter and put a 9 pin in it's place so I can use my 1084 monitor or does the 23 pin cable have termination in it so I can use my Video Toaster?

Hmm, I haven't seen a slow disk spin-up problem like that since OS3.0, where the system didn't wait long enough for some drives to power up.

Sound like it's the HD not spinning up fast enough to be recognized by the bootstrap. I see you are using OS3.9, I'm pretty sure the kickstart 3.1 roms needed to run 3.1 to 3.9 had this problem fixed in the roms to allow for slower HD to be recognised and boot up from power on.

Not sure but you may find something on Aminet to help solve this problem other than investing in a new faster HD... :)

A long time ago my Amiga 2000 used to do this.  I believe there was a jumper on either my A2091 SCSI controller card, or on the hard drive itself which would deal with slow spin up in the drive....wouldn't make the drive spin up faster, but would make the Amiga wait or look a few extra times for the drive.....sorry, my memory is a bit fuzzy on that!

There might also be a boot delay jumper on the drive.

If he has the 1280 AT fireball (Quantum drive) it has no delay jumper. The jumpers pertain only to Master and Slave settings.

My A1200 with OS3.1 somestimes does that with a modern 40 GB laptop drive, while an older 8 GB was booting straight. No big deal, i just Ctrl-A-A and it's fine.
