Black and white video with ntsc amiga cd32
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:45:13 AM »
Hello to all!!!  I have an NTSC Amiga CD32 that will only display games in black and white.  The games are not PAL games so I am not sure what the issue is.  I have tried it with my trusty old 1702, and 1084S with the same result each time.  I am aware of the ability to boot in PAL and NTSC by hooking up a mouse to port #2, and holding both mouse buttons down on boot.  The system should be booting in NTSC and the games are NTSC so I am stuck.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!!!!

Does the CD32 splash screen display in Colour or B/W?

Where do you live and how is the CD32 connected to your TV?

Edit:  and while this may be a silly question in this day and age, is your TV colour or Black & White?

Ah... a montor!  Doh!  :D

My UK A1081 had component input and a "green screen" button.  Never tried it with an NTSC input though (had the AMiga connected via the RGB port and a PAL VCR to the component).

I do know in PAL mode the CD32 still sends the color info in a NTSC format.

NTSC/PAL option is really just a 50/60hz option...

Lack of color in NTSC mode suggests that something is wrong with your CD32.

Many NTSC CD32 were assembled poorly with capacitors soldered in backwards, etc...

I know my NOS CD32 turned out to be nothing but frustration.

I think it's the monitor's problem and not the CD32. Have you tried plugging it into a TV through Composite or S-Video?

Alternately, if it was originally a PAL system, and (partially) converted to NTSC, the color burst frequency would still be PAL even though the sync frequency would be NTSC. There are places in the world where this is the standard for tv, and is called PAL-60.

Thank you Cammy, I was actually thinking of trying the S video through the VCR which I have the 1084S on top of.  I will see if this works.  I figured that I would not have any trouble getting color just hooking it up the same as I would have an Xbox, or my Amiga 600.  Must be something different with the CD32.  Thank you again.:roflmao:

Thank you to all for taking the time to help me out.  I will give the S video a try running it through my vcr/dvd player hooked up to my 1084 and see if this solves the problem.:)

Could be your particular monitor has a tough time syncing to the CD32 for some reason. Zenith, Goldstar and Samsung made monitors & TV's often exhibited that problem back in the day. Solution if that's the case is to turn the monitor off and then back on while the CD32 is on, or change inputs and go back to the one that's plugged into the CD32. Color will magically appear (if that's the issue anyway).

I did try pushing different buttons both on the back, and the RGB button in the front of my 1084S, but either no change, or just a blank screen.  I will try powering monitor on/off while the CD32 remains on.  Never had this problem with any other system I have used my 1084 with.
