Big SFS problem - help needed

Hi.

I have a 40 GB HD on my A1200 (OS3.1 ROM 3.1) with latest SFS 1.279, split in 3 partitions (500 MB for DH0:, 4 GB for DH1: and everything else on DH2:).

Everything was working fine until yesterday.
This morning, i had error messages on boot (see pictures) about SFS errors, and DH0: has become NDOS. DH1 and DH2 are still readable when connecting my HD to UAE.

Is there a way to solve this SFS error? What should i do to save my data on DH0: (hours of carefully choosen programs and patches installed)?






This HD was newly installed in my A1200 (about a month), in replacement of a 8 GB one (hopefully, i still have the old datas on this HD but i will definilty prefer to save the current HD).

I thought i would be spared of this kind of problem with SFS.

This unfortunately is a common misconception. SFS is even worse in this regard than the alternatives. There's no repair program for SFS, except in MorphOS.

PFS3 is easily the best filesystem for classic: It's both faster and more reliable than SFS. It comes with a repair tool, tool.

I was thinking of making a hdf backup of DH0: yesterday night, then i thought "this A1200 is rock solid, never crashes even after a whole day of uptime, it can wait"

But i still have an old outdated image from 1 month ago.

You might wanna try SFSSalv which comes with the package and can be used to recover files from damaged SFS partitions. So you can try to get as many files off the damaged partition before reformatting.

Put the drive in a MorphOS machine and try the SFS repair tool.

yet sfs slav or the other tool under os4 (iv forgot the name) will only recover the little part of lost data. ive been told lately by matthey (who had the same kind of problem) that you have to recover step by step, dir by dir to get the whole stuff back. pretty boring, right?

in general i'd advise everybody to stay away from sfs. frankly.

I have used SFS on 20+ machines i have for over 10+ years and have never lost a thing with it. its super reliable,way faster than ffs,and works well when SET UP RIGHT.
When i say i use it,i mean i use it daily.I have never lost any data with it except when a harddrive mechanically failed,and i had backups.My a4000 mediator is used daily and never misses a beat.

His problem could of been caused by anything from wrong mask/max transfer settings to bad ide cable... who knows what.

Make BACKUPS people ) read the sfs guide, use the tools available to check partitions over 4gb.

There is no better repair tool for SFS than SFSDoctor for MorphOS, this tool actually REPAIRS damaged partitions and it also gives you the choice to copy data over to a different volume before the repair attempt.

Your other choice is SFSSalv which only lets you copy all data from the dagamed partition to a new one so that you can reformat and copy data back.

SFSSalv did the job under UAE, though i am unsure to have 100% of my files back.

I am now backuping everything.

That's the first time i had problem with SFS in 10 years, so i can't blame it too much (unlike FFS).

SFSDoctor for OS 3.x would be appreciated.

very well. thanks for pointing it out as miss-info. then why occures ffs2 on exactly the same drives with exactly the same cables within exactly tha same machines super reliable in comparison? except of that there is more people who confirm my experience, and many of them guys of much better technical expertise than mine. of course this might be a problem with particular version, but i recall to use few latest vesions of j.strohmayer. if you use it since 10 years maybe you have a version that predates strohmayers involvement. such an old version might be more reliable.

 in any case i wish you futher same luck with your sfs, frankly. i havnt have any serious need for backups since i resigned on it.
