G5 does have enough horsepower for today's stuff.

I just have a hard time spending money on anything that isn't Intel these days, since MacOS went x86 and then there's all the x86 Linux and of course good old reliable Windows* to run.

*Hi, I'm a Microsoft Certified Professional (the enemy,) nice to meet you!

If that's really you in the pic, then you must have been in one of those 80's bands like The Human league, ABC, or Spandau Ballet, I'll wager... :)

Nah, all of those guys have lost their hair already!

(At least Phil Oakey sure did.)

I reckon it should suit me, as I really only want it to be able to access the net more quickly than what this G4 can do, and the little play around I had with the last G5 I tried things like iDVD and iMovie ran at useable speeds on it. :)

I can put the G4 on ebay and get around £250 -to £280 for it quite easily as they very rarely go for much less than that here... :)

Well, crap.  Let me buy them for $100 here all day and send them over that way.  I'm no stranger to international shipping!

Might be a nice little earner if you can get them for that price, seems people over here (like me) pay some crazy prices for stuff on ebay... :)

Ere, Tone007, you seem to know quite a bit about macs, if I could pick your brain for a minute with a quick question... :)

What would be the best & quickest way to transfer my data from the G4 to the G5 when I get it, I was wondering if I could connect them up with a firewire cable and do it that way... :)

Cheers

...  and it runs a hell of a lot faster than this G4 (you can actually watch youtube vids properly on it)... :)

Yea. I told a mate to buy a mac-mini that was for sale locally, suggesting that it would be good to watch iPlayer and YouTube on, and imagine the shame of it... IMAGINE THE SHAME!!!!

How dreadfully embarrasing.  Last time I recommend anything Mac.

With a Mac it is simple... Boot the G4 in Target mode (with a firewire between them), and when you boot the install disk (on the new machine) select to transfer the accounts across. I have a brand new MacBook here where the user accounts are over 4 years old and originally set up on my old 12" PowerBook and have been transferred this way 5 times now!!!

In all seriousness, though should really think about an intel mac... the PPC ones are really long in the tooth now.

Wow... a real live member of the Wurzels is amongst us, give us a quick chorus of "I've Got A Brand New Combine Harvester"...

Can I have your autograph pleeeaase... (luved the Wurzels I did)

Joking aside, gonna have to do a bit of detective work here and find out the REAL band you were in, I have a couple of ideas but need to double check first... ;)

PS: Thanks for the info on the Mac, I'll see how it works out sell the G4 and if I decide to sell the G5 I can easily get my money back on it and buy an intel one instead... :)

I'm using AmigaOS 3.9 on my main A1200, AmigaOS 3.1 on my second A1200 and AmigaOS 2.1 on my A600. I do also have a A500 in storage on which I used a highly modified WB2.04 floppy in the past.

I kind of like the idea of using all versions of AmigaOS that I have used in the past.

Lol! My old band we had an album out on Universal Records a few years back... we were doing to sort of Electronic Rock music that was popular for a while... our stuff is still available via iTunes if not in your local HMV anymore :)
