I cant really offer any suggestions sorry, but I am curious how one accidently formats a harddrive ?  :-)  You either have to use a shell and type stuff, or use an icon, which prompts you if you're sure and then asks for volume label, if you want disk cache/trashcan/etc.
These things arent easy to do by accident  :-)
Or does OS3.0 not have these things ?  It's been a loooong time since Ive used 3.0.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Lock doesn't prevent format.

My solution to this problem back in the olden days was to buy an external Magneto-Optical drive.  Each disk held 540MB and had a hardware write-protect switch on them.  Once you flip the switch, nothing on the drive can be erased.

As with any hard drive problem, regular backups prevent data loss.  I've added USB to my 4000 and regularly copy the hard drive to an SD card.

Backup Backup Backup!

WOW... Piru got something wrong...

Lock DOES prevent you from Formatting a HD, just tried it a moment ago from both the CLI & the Workbench

Result, A requester telling you "Device In DHX: is write Protected" Format Failed... :)

I should point out that this was tried on OS 3.5, not sure about 3.0 or 3.1 as I don't have any partitions on those machines that I can risk testing it on... :)

if you use a computer and work with programs file managers, you can pass a careless error that formatting the HD, or if someone else uses the computer does not have much experience with computers, can format a HD..
Exists many ways for mistake Format HD

Drummerboy: First, you should be careful who you let use your Amiga(s) (The only other human being I trust around my miggies is Save2600) Another option is a Zip drive, which can be software locked... EDIT: Never mind, Zip's can still be formatted w/HDToolbox.. :(

And, I repeat what Bob said... 'Backup, Backup, Backup.'

And, you might as well install MCP, as it does this and Soooo much more....:)

I think once when I had a stuck workbench some click did start a format but happily I recognized it quickly. Some work was needed to get it back but nothing was lost: And I do have backups of everything.

When I was working with mentally handicapped ppl I had to lock most of the drives to keep everything from being erased.

Not just from format but they had this way of somehow selecting ALL icons and throwing them in the trash or something.

I would say that they purposely formatted the drive than, as they must have chosen "do you really wish to format" tab.
