How much would you pay for...

...an A1200 that you could not see working? There is one near me and the guy had previously said £40 but I'm thinking this is a tad high considering that I can't see it working and there will be no refunds. Unsure is it's a 3.0 or 3.1, but wil try having a closer look over the weekend and a peek in the trapdoor too.

I wouldn't pay anything for something I couldn't see working, unless it's too far away.
I usally take it on good trust with photos, but even then I would be cautious with something of high value like exotic accelerators.

I guess the chances of it being usable, or at least repairable are higher than if it was an A2000 or A500 with an old RAM/RTC expansion with exploded batteries. But you do have to remember a lot of old A1200s, A600s and CD32s develop capacitor problems which can stop things from working until they're replaced, but at least the damage caused by them exploding is less than that from a big old barrel battery.

Define "near" you ?

If its within travel distance and the guy is simply refusing to let you see, then ask yourself if you are willing to pay 40 quid for a pile of spare parts.

dude don't buy the 1200 unless you see and hear it working!..trust me cause I've done enough soldering to re-pipe a house lately on my 1200 and it's been babied for 15+ years...now of course I enjoy tinkering with stuff anyhow but that's another story altogether:afro:

At least a few defective A2000 had descent parts in them, one was filled with cards, including a GVPHC8II with 4MB and an A2320 another one also had a GVP HC8II with 8MB.
I even picked up 3 A2000 which one of them had a GVP 030 Combo in it, I said to him if this card works I'll give you the 100 euro right away
And on the A2000 you can always extract everything, take out the PSU and floppy drives and if your good, desolder the cpu slot (yes these will fetch something).
 
But an A1200 is useless unless you have the proper tools like a hot air station to desolder the ic's, if you only consider the housing and kickstart, it would be an expensive 40 pounds.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't go fot it. It was a guy in a market stall. He had a couple of A500+'s but they were filthy. I have however just unearthed one in the attic and will be hooking it up to test it.

I'll start a new thread if I have issues with it, but the plan is to clean it up wih retrobrite, fit a CF card, a new Indivision and accelerator from Jens and use it as a WHDload machine as well as the A4000 that I have.

Handy tip for cleaning Amiga cases or any type of plastic as well as monitors keyboards, CD/DVDs, Washing machines, fridges, DVD players and lots of other things...

Use a UPVC cleaner (the kind for cleaning/restoring UPVC window frames/Patio doors) it brings things up like brand new without scratching and give them that feel that you've just taken them out the packaging...

Weird tip, I know, but it works...
