NASA wouldn't pick Amiga today. The total cost of ownership is too high.

Why do you think m68k CPUs are still being sold ? If not for the NASAs of the world and their contractual obligations, Freescale would have long stopped selling these CPUs.

Staf.
Trust me...                                              I know what I\'m doing

The Cray-1 and Cray-2 supercomputers used proprietary vector processors. The 68040 wasn't released until 1990 or so whereas the Cray-2 was released in about 1985. It was already doing almost 2 GFLOPS then, so it's hard to imagine a machine based on 68040's trumping that.

Tricky subject the old Shetland (hjaltland) is, let's just say we... erm borrowed them for a wee while and changed the name a wee bit and are taking good care of them... ;)

You better, or they'll revolt, huh? :roflmao:

As a Norwegian it's always a great joy to visit Shetland and Orkney, the people there seem very enthusiastic about their norse heritage and ties with Norway. Their flags and the way they use them speaks volumes :)

SGI and Sun and a bunch of others did 68k based Unix boxes too. My university still had a bunch of Sun boxes with 68020's in them in '94, though at point they were being slowly replaced by MIPS powered SGI's.

Also never heard Cray mentioned as a user. It's not that the CPU would be too slow per se for normal instructions,  but that it's not a vector unit - the entire point of at least Cray's early machines was that they offered extremely wide vector units. As far as I know, Cray only used their own designed CPU's until 1993 when they released a series based on the DEC Alpha.

It's not impossible they might have used 68k CPU's in "support" functions (though I have no idea if they did) such as terminals/operator consoles or to control peripherals or stuff like that (just like some Amiga models had a 6502 derivative on the keyboard, and some Amiga SCSI cards had a Z80 on them...), but certainly not as the main CPU.

SGI's Iris workstations were 68020 powered; but of course that was in 1987 or thereabouts.

Here is a list of models and CPU types; here's a picture of the CPU board.

Weeeeeeeell, I remember an episode that happened a couple of years ago where I met two really drunk men on a late saturday evening. We started talking and I understood that they weren't from Norway, so I asked them where they come from, and they replied "where do you think?". Then I said Ireland, which turned out to be a mistake since I later realized they were scottish. One of the men got very upset and suddenly had a red face, bulging eyes and clenched fists, and he mumbled something in a broad accent while the other guy tried to calm him down by saying that I didn't understand and that it all was a simple mistake.
He succeded with calming the other guy, but I was pretty sure I would get a serious beating for a while

So I belive that although the Irish, Scots & Welsh have in common that they hate the English, they do hate each other just a tiny bit as well Am I right or what? :)

Hi,

In Pennsylvania we call people from Ireland Micks, we call Scots what else but Scots, and have a saying, If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck then it must be a Scot, but if it falls like a duck, and quacks like a dog, then it must be a mick.

Hi,

@Franko,

Most Pennsylvanians are Pollacks, it seems that they like the letter P, so Pennsylvania and Polish both start with P's which turns out to be PP, which somehow leads to drinking beer, because we all know that in heaven there is no beer thats why we drink it here, and when were gone from here our friends will be drinkin all the beer. So if it looks like a P and acts like a P then it must be PP.

Hi,

@ all Scots and Irish,

Been sitting here drinking some Scotish whiskey and Irish whiskey, and do you know that after having 6 glasses of each, I still can't tell which one is better, and I swear to everything that is sacred that the end of the 7th glass of each they both seem to taste the same.

Hi,

Been drinkin some of the red grouse and mikey collins whiskey, and you know what, I am going to go to the old liquor shelf, and pull down the Crown Royal and see if it tastes the bloody same. If it does, that mean either I am really drunk or the darn micks ruined my taste buds again. Tried some of that jack daniels, but it tastes like darn sugar water or some kind of taste that a doctor serving you medicine might taste like. Any how almost done with the red grouse and mikey collins. I think I might go to bed, I feel a little sleepy about now.
