You know whats really funny..?

That fact that he was right..

And I don't care how much flame you guys bring in the next replies.
but it IS A TOY because my iphone has more power than your Amiga 1200.
and if my iphone is a toy which it is, how can the Amiga not be.

So you can try to hold on to the niche of it all for as long as you want.
In reality though, which is where the inspector was.

They ARE just a toy. a very expensive toy...

And whatever they "could" do 20 years ago they "can't" do now.

If it's packing a motorola 68040 that's an ex supercomputer cpu. In the old days there were no petaflops, but there were Crays Supercomputers with several 68040s in them.

Save2600: Yup, good call about NASA (Amiga's were used to monitor telemetry, because, according to one NASA employee, 'They never crash') Not bad for a 'toy'...

mikrucio: Simply because a machine is no longer state-of-the-art has nothing to do with it being a 'toy' or not.

Trying to think of an analogy..... I inherited an old LED calculator from my dad, one of the first on the market, it works OK.. no scientific functions, base-conversion, graphing.... But hey, it works just as well for a basic calculator as the latest TI models....  The Amiga may be slow and under-powered compared to current PC's, but it is still quite useable as a computer, to say the least. Judging by some Amiga music I heard from A.org members, I would have to say the sound quality is equal to or better than any other PC I've heard.

And ya know, buddy, you can keep your Photoshop and GIMP... If I want to do Serious graphics work, it means DCTVPaint,DPaint5,PPaint7,and/or ImageF/x... or Lightwave, or Plotter3D, or.....On My Amiga... :afro:

Gonna just go and play with my 'toys' .... :roflmao:

I could accept labeling the Amiga as a "Toy".

Toys are fun. Amigas are also fun (as well as useful)

I can't say that most other so-called "real computers" I've used were much fun, at least to me.

We scots avoid the doctors like the plague, if you do visit one your usually greeted with the words, 'sorry pal but you've only got three months to live...'
(PS:It's always winter here in Scotland, my granda once told me about this thing called the SUN but I think he was making it up...) :)

@ JJ
Now we Scots generally get on very well with the Welsh, cos we both have one thing in common, we both hate the English (it's a birthrite), but dinnae go n try nickin oor wurds "Sassenach" is a Scottish word... :)

May the fleas of a thousand rabid scaby dugs infest every orifice of you and all your descendants, or may you choke on the smell of a thousand drunken Scotsmens jockstraps... :)

@ Kronos
That referee was actually a one eyed German with a swiss passport, who's actual grandfather was Scottish and his Grandmother was Welsh with hint of Irish thrown in... :)

Sorry if I left anyone out but me brains starting to seize up... :)

Sorry Franko not trying to steal your words.   but its very simillar to to the bad word for English in Welsh, thought you had mis-spelt it :)

I cant say welsh and scots generally very similar, judging by the gibberish they seem to be talking on BBC Alba :)

Now cornish and Welsh very smiliar and also very similar to briton.

Yeah, I suppose we should roll our spineless selves over and take it in the back end like any good subject of the crown, whilst our empire is slowly dissolved.

Given the election results, I see you've collectively already bent over and dropped your pants.

But let me tell you what a real WINTER is: When I was in the army I was stationed in the northern part of Norway, where we sometimes had to sleep in a tent when there was -20° Celsius (and sometimes even colder) outside.

I think you confused the seasons. I've experienced -30 for several weeks straight near Oslo. That was starting to feel a bit nippy. When it was -20 I used to sleep with my window open.

That said, I've visited Northern Alberta, Canada in October and that makes me never want to set foot anywhere in Northern Canada during their actual winter.

He called the limey git a Saxon. Read up on your Scotts English history. The Brits have never treated the Scotts well. Not that they every really got along in the first place.

They didn't exactly treat the Welsh well either if you want to look up that history also.

So I belive that although the Irish, Scots & Welsh have in common that they hate the English, they do hate each other just a tiny bit as well Am I right or what? :)

Well, there's probably a grain of truth in there alright :) You will find a good number are just fiercely proud of their country and that's the end of it... And mix that with the types who go out to get totally drunk and look for a fight, and you have the guys you met there. If you'd bought him a drink you'd probably be best friends with him in the end ;)

I believe the Amiga or any computer is what you make of it, if you just want to toy around with it fine, if you want to do some serious or creative stuff with it great, but it's none of the tax mans business and I think he's a total arse for spouting off about it.

He then had the cheek to say 'but yes, in this day and age no-one would seriously use one of those let alone call it a computer',

Unfortunately I too would class the classic Amiga as a toy. The classic amiga compared to the behemoths of today is like comparing a Speak and Spell to an (aforementioned variety of) Amiga.

I'm quite happy to have them classed as that, since the common models were also classed as that back in the day and why CBM never really got into making massive sales in actual Amiga business machines (exceptions being Videotoaster etc etc).

Would you class a ZX Spectrum as a toy? Sir Clive intended it for an educational establishment audience but had to settle for the home games market (and very well he did out of it).

Edit: I wouldn't have expected the council guy to know about the more powerful Amigas (which is I'm assuming what you took offence at) - I would have excused his ignorance.

Tricky subject the old Shetland (hjaltland) is, let's just say we... erm borrowed them for a wee while and changed the name a wee bit and are taking good care of them... ;)

@ Tone007
Orkney is quite simply the land where the best mature Chedder Cheese in the world come from... (they're allowed to roam free on that windswept little place until they reach full maturity, when they are mercilessly culled, wrapped in cellophane and sent off to the shops for me to buy and eat as cheese on toast...) :)

@ mikrucio
Are you a Taxman, hmm you sound suspiciously like a Taxman, Burn him, Burn the unbeliever I say... ( or failing that just gently prod him with a long pointy stick...) :)

@ JJ
Not even when drunk can either of BBC Albas two viewers understand what is being said, still it's one more viewer than S4C has... :biglaugh:
