If they do they are idiots, Amiga was a revolutionary state of the art machine (A1000) to a genuine alternative (A4000 on launch day) and now they are all vintage computers. Amiga was never a toy, it was a creative machine or an awesome [when programmed properly] games computer that did some things better than a Megadrive (shit twangy music) pfff (Lotus II is impossible on the SNES) or PC (shit OS that broke at the mere though of multimedia in 1985-1993) and Mac (overpriced single tasking bollox)

This is my potted history of the computing past, feel free to print this out and superglue it to the eyeballs of non-believing Macwankers/Doswankers/Nintendopes :)

Oh wow, you sure did tell off 21 years ago.  Man I bet 1989 is feelin' the burn from that one.

HEAR THAT, PAST?  YOU SUCK!

All this talk about the Amiga being a "toy" got me to thinking. In the context of the way the taxman spoke - I mean... did he sound condescending or was he just trying to spark a conversation? Talking about the kids growing out of 'em after high school could have just been genericmans mediocre way of trying to relate. Whenever I've had members of the mainstream over for whatever reason (ie: no real hobbies or creativity, just a wifey, kids, pets, "career" and a favorite sports team), every_single_time they will catch something 'cool' to talk about out of the corner of their eye. And every_single_time, it is in not only amazement that what they're gazing upon is in such nice shape, but they reflect on *whatever* with admiration of their past. Like the oldies, takes people back to a time they felt good about.

It's all in the attitude and inflection when they speak. I can't imagine anyone coming over to your home (as a guest, taxman, whatever), just to go out of their way to insult you. I also bet the guy couldn't tell the difference between a Famicom, Commodore 64 or an Amiga. More than likely thought it was a Spectrum or Commodore 64 for all we know. And if the guy had any common sense at all, he'd know that classic or vintage toys typically have great value behind them.

People call their yachts, toys. Their collectible autos, toys. Their jacuzzi, a toy. Toys are the reason for the season. What makes the world go 'round....

Besides all this, who cares. He's a taxman who's hated by all. Hated even more than telemarketers - who is made to feel like shit each and every day for choosing such a worthless occupation. Guy probably loathes himself and explains why he was such a dick (if that was his real M.O.), picking on a hapless vintage computer enthusiast  ;)

We Irish can join in here and generally get on with you Scots and Welsh well for the same reasons... Though we won't need to steal any of your words - we've plenty of terms of our own for the English ;)

Weeeeeeeell, I remember an episode that happened a couple of years ago where I met two really drunk men on a late saturday evening. We started talking and I understood that they weren't from Norway, so I asked them where they come from, and they replied "where do you think?". Then I said Ireland, which turned out to be a mistake since I later realized they were scottish. One of the men got very upset and suddenly had a red face, bulging eyes and clenched fists, and he mumbled something in a broad accent while the other guy tried to calm him down by saying that I didn't understand and that it all was a simple mistake.
He succeded with calming the other guy, but I was pretty sure I would get a serious beating for a while

So I belive that although the Irish, Scots & Welsh have in common that they hate the English, they do hate each other just a tiny bit as well Am I right or what? :)

Thats what I love about Amiga.org, I mean where else can a thread go so completely on & off topic yet still be so interesting and fun to read. Reckon that's why I feel right at home here it's a complete madhouse... :)

You can only take the advice of the great Blackadder and say... WIBBLE...

@ save2600
Naw, it was said in a condescending tone of voice with more than a hint of a sneer on the slimy little gits coupon.. (still he's only a Taxman and that's as low as you can get...) :)

@ PanterHZ
I think it's genetic in these isle's while we all claim to hate the English, your right we do jump at slightest opportunity to hate each of our little nations, especially when the weather is good and we've got nothing else to complain about (it's just considered a national pastime in these parts...) :)

Eye but you softy Norwegiks dinnae wer a kilt dae ye, try dain rat an see whit happens tae yer dangly bits in winter...

Please tell me Franko, is it really true that kilt users have no underwear on?

But let me tell you what a real WINTER is: When I was in the army I was stationed in the northern part of Norway, where we sometimes had to sleep in a tent when there was -20° Celsius (and sometimes even colder) outside. Try to imagine going outside and pulling down the pants in order to do some "private business" in this cold. Oooooh! My dangly bits, I was almost afraid of losing them each time

I have never been so quick in doing what I had to do as I was back then.

Personally I've never worn a kilt, cos with my spindly legs and knoblly knees it wouldn't be a pretty site...

I can only say that the funeral I was at on Monday, there were a few kilt wearers in attendance and as it was such a windy day some of the sights were not very pleasant to behold when the wind blew... :)

Minus 20, I think we achieved that high a temperature back in the summer of 86... :roflmao

Absolutely Splendid idea. Maybe once they experience taxation outside the US they'll "shut their buggerin cak holes".

Yeah, I suppose we should roll our spineless selves over and take it in the back end like any good subject of the crown, whilst our empire is slowly dissolved.

Well, in that case - would have been nice to see the look on the wankers face after you explained to him that NASA employed several Amiga "toys" to perform some of their most important calculations  ;)

You know whats really funny..?

That fact that he was right..

And I don't care how much flame you guys bring in the next replies.
but it IS A TOY because my iphone has more power than your Amiga 1200.
and if my iphone is a toy which it is, how can the Amiga not be.

So you can try to hold on to the niche of it all for as long as you want.
In reality though, which is where the inspector was.

They ARE just a toy. a very expensive toy...

And whatever they "could" do 20 years ago they "can't" do now.

It's a computer, not a human being. What can it not do today what it did 20 years ago?

If it's packing a motorola 68040 that's an ex supercomputer cpu. In the old days there were no petaflops, but there were Crays Supercomputers with several 68040s in them.
