Coonecting an Amiga to a router

Hi there,

I've changed a bit of our computer setup. Of course, there IS an Amiga involved: A1200 + Blizzard 040@50 & SCSI, a ZIV-board and a.o. an X-surf board. OS is 3.9. TCP by Genesis.
At the other end of the table there is an AMD-based system. It used to run under ME.
At one time I had a network set up that really worked. With a X-link cable. Pretty straight forward.
But a few weeks ago we changed to XP. It IS faster and much, much more stable! But from ME's point of view that is not a great achievement, now is it?
Today I have installed a router (E-Tech RTBR03) between the two systems, using straigh patchcables. The router has been hooked up to a Cable modem (guess what? It bears a stilized M-logo...). The PC's end of the setup works fine. A Notebook temporarily hooked up was perfectly recognized by the AMD-system. But I'm having problems setting up my Amiga...

The router is setup for Dynamic IP.
In GenesisPrefs-->Interfaces-->(Network-entry)--> Tab Interface I selected for all addresses `dynamic` That is for IP address, destination, gateway but netmask is manually set to 255.255.255.0

When trying to run this setting of Genesis, there is an error about inetd¨xxxxxx* ± amiganetfs-tcp± unknown service. And it won´t establish.

Ahem, when this piece of proza is littered with a plusminus sign and asterisks and other such things where they were least expected you should read a full colon, a question mark for an equalsign, etc. Bear in mind that this piece was witten on an XP/based system. And even that is not perfect. Dear God have mercy... And bring us OS4 in due time. Jahweh, Allah, Vishnoe, all of you help us out!

But back to the subject of connecting the Amiga, is there a mortal wha can help me out=

The dynamic network setting of Genesis didn't work at all on my system, either. You may try the dhcp-software from aminet. But IMHO it's a lot easier to get along with static IPs. I've made my router 192.168.0.1, my miggy ...0.2 and a Windumb machine ...0.3. Work's fine! BTW:You should disable amiganetfs at all (by deleting the from services in Genesis) for security reasons.

I don't know about your specific router (not to mention that
I use Miami and not Genesis), but I would think it should
work to keep your Amiga at dynamic IP-allocation. That's
what I use between my router and my A4000 anyway.

Um, try to find out what IP-adress you router has on your
local network (probably something like 192.168.0.1 or
somesuch) and set your Amigas "gateway" to
that (static) IP-number. Worth a shot. If there is something
wrong in the Genesis config, I cannot help.

Just set your IP manually. It doesn't hurt the router.
after having (under cmd.exe) done on XP side :
ipconfig /all
take a free IP in the same range as your XP actual IP.
that is :
if your XP has the IP : 192.168.0.5
give your Amiga the IP : 192.168.0.10
(set the same mask : 255.255.255.0)
the gateway is the router, so set gateway with its IP.
usually : 192.168.0.1

im not sure but i dont think that genesis supports DHCP so go for static IP as suggested.

The dynamic setup in Genesis doesn't use DHCP as Elektro said. It uses older and obsolete standards, RARP and BootP, as far as I remember, which will do you now good. Go for a static IP or find Miami somewhere.

This is very useful info for me too because I too have installed a router and the last time I hooked up my Amiga was when I didn´t have one, so it seems that I´ve gotta change my configs too ...

From what I remember, all I had to do was plug the amiga into the router (linksys), and set everything to DHCP.  I would start miami (from user startup) and have the settings at DHCP.  Things worked great!  When I looked at the connections on the router, the amiga showed up.  Heck, even the dreamcast showed up =)

Now setting up samba to mount the amiga on the PC screen and vice versa... THAT was a little bit trickier.

Your best bet is to use Miami or MiamiDX. You can get the demo from Aminet, and if you look in the usual places I am sure you can get a set of keys for it since you can no longer get them by paying.

I use MiamiDX and just have it detect my setting for me with DHCP. Its was a snap and works perfectly.

I have a Linksys router and had NO problems setting up my Amithlon box with the genesis on the CD. Still, you have to setup everything as they have stated before. I won't bother reposting the statistics, since it would be redundant.

Genesis WILL work, though. Miami is BY FAR, better, but Holger has all but vanished from the Amiga Community.

Which SanaII device have you chosen in the Interface preference? and in Resolve tab?

those message is displayed in the Genesis network window? That atates a misconfiguration of inetd-amiganetfs that you can find under Preference-Inetd.

Which SanaII device have you chosen in the Interface preference? and in Resolve tab?

Have you only 1 interface (the one to go online) OR have you another one for the LAN?

The problem ATM, is that Genesi is owned by H&P that it isn't "generous" about information even to NIC card developer.
